Hi,
New member and first post.
I've tried fitting fire and ice style side steps to my 1998 300tdi. The passenger side fits ok but at the drivers side the fuel tank is in the way. Is there a way around this or do I need different side steps?

Any advice appreciated!

Welcome to the forum.
Do they have a support bar that goes from the middle of the step to the chassis rail?
The original LR single step has one, but it's much lower down and clears the tank.
Were they sold as fitting your vehicle?
 
Firstly I would check that they were designed to fit pre TD5 models as if they weren't then you can forget it unless you fancy going for a rear-mounted tank (and all the issues that will cause you).
If they are not designed for vehicles with the underseat tank then you would be best finding a different type that will fit (there are plenty out there).
You don't say the brand but I have just Googled "fire and ice style side steps" and while some say will fit all MY's, others say they only fit later ones.

Yeah, there like the ones on the ebay link.

They were the original ones fitted to my 2014 90. I had new steps fitted to that truck and had the original ones grit blasted and powder coated because my wife bought a 1998 300tdi truck cab and I thought I could fit them to that.

If they won't fit due to the beneath the seat fuel tank. Whats the best option for ones that will fit? I'll just ebay the ones I've had powder coated.

Just a thought, some side steps hang from the inner sill rail as I think the ones above do. Others connect to the outrigger bolts. I went for ones that connected to the outriggers as the connecting bars looked far sturdier. The outriggers will be sturdier than the sill rail too. Just my opinion though!

Hmm, can't remember as it's about six years since the rebuild. I'm away on holiday and so can't look through my stuff either. I'll do a bit of Googling to see if I can find an example.
