Good morning all.

i wonder if anyone can help me. im rebuilding my 300tdi disco engine. i have just received new rings and bearings. i went to fit the rings last night and they are a lot thinner than the old ones. i.e the ring gap in the piston is way over the tolerance limit. now i know the piston is in really good condition so im very doubtful that its excessive wear in the gap. (the old ring/gap was within the tolerance)
now i haven't seen any options on sales the thickness. so im now stuck.
any help would be great.

Thanks Gary

If the old ones are close to tolerance and the news ones aren't then either you have some duff rings or ones for a different engine model. Either way you need to send them back for replacement.

HI Gary,

Hope I am not asking / suggesting something stupid? But have you bought standard rings and the old pistons / rings and bores are oversize ie it has had a rebore? Have you measured the bore?

Best Regards

Mark

I read it as he is taking about the actual ring thickness (rather than diameter) and clearance between in the ring and the piston groove rather than the measuring the actual ring end gap?
