300tdi or td5

hi everyone my first post in forum

I am thinking of changing my series 3 88 for a defender not sure if to get a 300tdi or td5 any help would be good.

Welcome. Well, there's opinions either way on the value of 300tdis versus td5s. The 300tdi is simpler and has fewer electronics and the td5 is a bit more powerful, has a more tunable engine and more electronics, conveniently located under the driver's seat so as to get them wet during wading or even heavy showers. A TD5 night be better if you do more long distances on motorways and A roads as it's a bit more civilised at speed. If you spend a lot of time in the mud a 300 might be your best bet.

Thanks for your reply, I am looking at a TD5 and a 300TDI this weekend

TD5, they aren't even that susceptible to water and thugs either. Friends TD5 offroader was stuck upto the bonnet at the front and half way up the doors and he didn't have his ECU moved at the time but still was perfect.


If your doing alot of Offroading, the 300 is easier to keep going as its cheaper to work on and parts are very cheap for them.


If its a Defender that's going to be used on the road or as a daily driver, I'd go TD5 every time

I'd say 300tdi any day much simpler

That power will soon die out when one of those electrical gremlins pop up
