Land Rover Defender 90
1989 - G Reg
72,000 Miles (Previous clocks before 300TDI were around 120,000 I'm told)
6 Months Mot (20 December'ish)
2 Months Tax (August 2014)
It's with genuinely great sadness I have for sale my 300TDI Defender 90 Soft Top. As I now have the double cab, the 90 has just sat around and I just can't bare to see it sit there any more. I have been trying to think of reasons to keep it, but I just can't justify it and I need to pay off some of the costs the 110 has brought up recently!
It was bought as a bit of a rolling project as I have always fancied Defenders! Always had a soft spot for them!
I bought it probably just over a year ago from a young lad up in Newcastle who apparently couldn't afford the running costs. I was told the guy before him did a bit of a restoration job, then used it as a shooting truck (Was a Truck Cab). It has had a 300TDI fitted and it's fitted properly, in the correct position using all the correct kit. Along with the engine, it has the proper R380 with the 300TDI running gear (Discs all around).
The chassis is absolutely solid, as is the rear cross member and the bulkhead. Not signs of rot at all. Chassis has surface rust, but all it needs is a good scrub down and degrease, then a good coating of Waxoil or Dinitrol and it'll be good for many years to come! Bulkhead is again solid and footwells are clean as a whistle. The windscreen 'hinges' have some paint bubble, but again, scrub down and flash over will see them right!
Engine is a peach and runs lovely. When I got it, there was a small blow to the rear of the head. So I commenced with a refurb. 9,000 miles ago it had:
Professional head skim and pressure test
Genuine heavy duty 3-Hole head gasket and full gasket set
Exhaust gasket
P-Gasket
Thermostat
Timing belt set with updated pulley
Auxiliary belt
Auxiliary belt tensioner
Water pump
Water pump pulley
Lift pump
Glow plugs
Injector seals
Injector clamps
Air filter
Oil filer
Fuel filter
Engine oil
Coolant
Diff oils (EP90)
Transfer box oil (EP90)
Gearbox oil (MTF 94)
I then thought I may as well get a few bits done that I wanted as it was all apart anyway so at the same time I fitted:
Allard full width front intercooler
Allard hose set with silicone sections
Allisport oil catch tank
Modeo electric fan and RDX switch (though switched manually at the moment)
Straight through downpipe
Later 300TDI straight through centre section and rear resonator removal pipe (same cenre section as TD5 I believe)
Terrafirma (Pipercross) air filter
Digital boost pressure sensor (high grade, taken from inlet manifold)
4x Red Avenger EGT probs (one for each exhaust port)
Clutch master cylinder
Clutch slave cylinder
The plan was to tune the pump, but 9,00 miles later I never got around to it as I never felt it needed it. Would have been nice to see what it was like, but just never had the time and was quite happy at where she was! The Boost sensor and the EGT probes aren't included as I plan to use these on the TD5, but can be worked into the deal if required. The EGT compression fittings will be left in place, but blanked off in case these are to be used again!
About 1,000 miles ago, she had a small service as well as a couple extras:
Oil
Oil Filter
Air Filter (OEM)
Fuel Filter
Bosch injectors (Brand new not refurbs)
Injector seals
Injector clamps again
Gwyn Lewis A-Frame ball joint with housing
A-Frame upper bushes
GKN prop shaft bearings
Wizard breather kit
It also has a few extras I've fitted over time including:
Heavy duty galvanised front bumper
Heavy duty galvanised rock and tree sliders
Window air/rain deflectors
2x Window washer mod
Rear light set
Centre cubby box
Pioneer front speakers (Radio and tray removed at the moment)
Gwyn Lewis SumoBAR Extreme Heavy Duty steering arms (the EXT solid ones)
Terrafirma RTC steering damper
When I got her, she was a truck cab. Whilst it was nice, I had always wanted an ex-MOD softy which I remember watching as a kid, so I decided to get it done!
It has a full ex-MOD soft top set including hood, sticks, door surrounds and military roll bar (I did have some Dexion racking and external power supply from an FFR, but cant find it!)! The hood is very ex-MOD and has a few patches and the odd small hole. I do have a new sand coloured canvas with windows but I love the ex-MOD one. Has bags of character and it just fits what I had in my mind so it stayed on. I can swap for the sand one of wished, but I will be keeping the one not required as I have another full stick set and door surrounds to make up another whole kit, so will be selling that off separately! Although the odd hole, the military canvas is leak free! Not sure how, but it's never leaked!
I will also include a SafetyPedal and also a full military HazMat insulation / radiation kit which turns the Defender into a moving sleeping bag! It's absolutely lovely inside through winter! Keeps the warmth in lovely and feels real cosey!
The pics shown show her sat on steel modulars with 265/75 Kingpin Muds on, but I will be keeping these. She'll be sat on her original alloys running 235/85 Insa Turbo Desert Tracks which are in decent nick! Though badly painted black! A good pressure wash will have it off! I may also be keeping the Masai steering guard!
Down points are there's a dent on the front left wing at the front. I would guess it hit a tree!, was before I owned her, but alas, it's there and I need to mention it! The syncro between 1st and 2nd is getting a bit weak to. Nothing a careful change can't shift, but to be honest, I don’t tend to use 1st much! There's also a small amount of oil blow by in the turbo. Not sure why, with the catch tank there, but again, I like to be honest. Doesn't effect performance though and has never worried me to much! I was going to re-build the turbo with a new compressor wheel, but never got around to it! Nothing major though! There's also the usual clunking which I think is drive members. I had a set to go on, but they went on the Double Cab!
I am very very sure I've missed loads, but I'm running out of steam and starting to wish I wasn't selling, but needs must and all that!
I'm looking for figures somewhere around the £3,800 mark and can work extras into a deal if desired! Have loads of spares which I will chuck in, including various new bits including another water pump, couple of auxiliary belts, air filters, oil filters and various other bits which I will chuck in. Have aftermarket bits like a full new Raptor dash which can be worked into a deal to. Wheel spacers, fume curtain, alarm system and central locking, galvanised cappings, another black canvas I was going to turn into a bikini hood etc etc.
Will add more info as I go and will get pics up ASAP!
