300tdi jumping from 2000rpm to 2500rpm

haha, at least you sorted it :)

Yup, though still have the weird revving issue to sort out. Took it for a run this evening, first run in a couple of weeks as Ive done quite a bit to it. New filters, 1.4 lt230, lift pump, alternator, radiator, water pump, oils.

Obviously with the revs doing what ever they like between 2k and 2.5k, its very hard to cruise at a speed that requires the revs to be in the area. Begins to kangaroo etc. Got a 6000mile trip in 3 weeks so getting a bit concerned. Must be the pump. Might have to take it in somewhere :(

I have a similar problem with my 300TDi. She's low on revs on startup when on veg, and a bit "lumpier" for want of a better term. I get a small flatspot at about 1800 rpm, and if you hold it there, say thats your crusing RPM she jerks a bit.

Ran my old transit for years on the stuff with no problems. Im on about 70% WVO.

I just take it that's its how it is. Still saving cash for now (until it blows up or something...)

i'd be diluting the veg oil right down first and seeing if it helps :)

also has anyone been tweaking your fuel pump, boost, etc? has the cap been removed?

Yeh the cap is missing so I assume someone has had a crack at some point. Really wouldn't mind someone having a look at the pump before I go away. I bet 100% diesel (which is what I'll be running on in Europe anyway) and a little fiddle with the pump will make the world of difference.

have a look to see if they've marked the orig settings.

be careful and pop the top off, make sure the diaphragm moves up and down, and it's not gummed up, etc.. check the pipe for splits. try not to move anything though and look for marks.

i was just thinking someone might have adjusted it so you are getting a bit too much fuel when it hits boost

do you get any smoke when it's warmed up?

if you make a note of the diaphragms position, i'd consider turning it anti-clockwise 45degrees, put it all back together and see what happens.

be careful though, you can bugger things up if you add too much fuel (which i'm trying to reduce) :)

I'll take a careful look tomorrow. I think your thinking is correct. It is about when the turbo kicks in. Under load, it doesnt quite do the jump, but it doesnt like sitting between 2k & 2.5k.

I hope the turbo is ok. If previous has played with pump, maybe they played with wastegate too.

sounds like an excuse to buy a boost gauge and egt to me :D

....its that word I dont like. I've spent >£600 in the last 6 weeks on this vehicle and the worst part about it, apart from the range rover seats, cosmetically, you wouldn't know I'd done anything to it :(

that being said, I wouldn't mind knowing.. do you know of any particular brands to go for? Gauge into inlet manifold? EGT into exhaust manifold?

eep 600quid..

brands? not really.. tim, vdo.. old school equus, smiths

tim for boost. there's a unused hole in the back of the inlet manifold, m10x1 iirc to stick an adapter into

egt i have seen mounted on the egr blank plate

tbh, you don't really need em ;)

boost guage would be nice regardless. I might just take it to the local tune shop and pay 20 quid to get it checked. Ultimately though, I want the pump to get a once over. Might try Strattons (local indy) but in my experience, garages are reluctant to touch them.

oil pressure gauge is handy too! haha

No pressure trax... but the rubber is now the only thing between me and 3 others and a 6000mile trip around europe :D :D

(i know its on its way :) )

that confused the eck out of me.. then i realised who you were ;)

it's been sent so it's winging it way around the uk somewhere. i'd expect to get it mon or tues :)

tweaking the fuel pump could make a decent difference to mpg on a 6k trip mind and if you are up this way, give a hola, free cups of tea and bacon butties!

Bit of a detour but gotta be worth it for tea and bacon. We are dropping straight down into France then east through the baltics then up and back round through Finland and Scandinavia.

Roughly 6k, about 4 weeks total. I'm just bricking it with the landy. Have done big trips before but not in a land rover lol.

haha yes, make sure you get good breakdown cover!

take lots of pics and make a thread :)

i'd also give it a service a week before you go.. new oils and filters for everything. take a spare fuel filter with you.

double check for any coolant leaks, esp around p gasket and the weep hole of the water pump, rad etc.

as long as you are happy that you aren't losing coolant then everything should be fiine.. maybe take a bottle and a tool to let you bleed the plugs and top it up if needed.

i'd also have a quick look at the wheel bearing to make sure they aren't contaminated with water/mud.

as you can see, my main concern would be with the engine overheating.. but if you keep on top of it, then it's all fine.

it sounds a great trip!

Yeh I'll make a thread when we get back. Cba with the attention before we leave.

Basically everything I've been doing recently I've been doing for the trip. Major service. If something goes wrong, it will be unforeseeable. Did water pump and p gasket the other day. New rad, new coolant. All filters. Bearings were all done a couple of months ago. New oils everywhere. Sedimenter, the lot. But of course, still got breakdown which covers us everywhere.

I'm going up to the lakes next week, literally to put some miles on it since all this work has been done, and put it on some long uphill roads (we don't have many round here and it's somewhat frowned upon to drive up Lincoln's infamous Steep Hill.)

Will be taking full tool kit anyway and a few spares. I've not had this truck long so havnt yet formed the intimate relationship I've had with my previous 2. If she survives this, I'll never let her go.

I drove across Ukraine and the Carpathian mountains in a fiesta in '11, needless to say, there was A LOT less vehicle prep.
