300TDI Head Gasket Question

My Big Green Thing is currently in the doctors having a new steering pump fitted. I was reading a fred a few weeks ago about another 300tdi Auto owner who's engine was a big loud had found the his head gasket had gone on the outside (so no water contimination)
I currently have a 97 Commercial manual bucket of bolts as a loaner while mine is being seen to and realised how quite this was compared to mine.
Is it worth doing the head gasket as part of preventative maintenance or not?

on a 15 year old motor with ali head and cast block id think about it caught before overheat is better ,its quite an easy job hg wise as no timing issues ,drain block with 13mm socket or spanner by removing plug on turbo side half way up just in front of down pipe ,only skim head if face is marked usually around fire ring ,youd need a new manifold gasket too as they often blow
