300tdi cambelt change
After recently purchasing a 1995 300tdi Disco with 116k I would like any advice on changing cambelt,pulleys etc.i.e Should the water pump be changed at the same time? or anything else done for that matter at the same time??????

There is also traces of a previous small water leak (white corrosion running down the block) which I think has come from the back of the water pump.Is this a problem & is there a gasket that should be changed?? previous owner said "they all leak a bit from there until they get warm"!!!!!!!
Water level not going down or over heating.

Best place to get bits who will post?

Yeh I ended up getting a right hand drive in the end but with the ride height it does'nt make any differance-Well chuffed with it!:D :D :D :D
I put a posting on "Scared" thanking you lot for all your help and advice with a few pics!!

I have ordered a Haynes manuel, I thought it best to change the water pump at the same time (Only £21).
 
Look in the archive and get the Est. PDF downloads. Watch the bolts on the cover they are all different sizes need to be removed in order threads cleaned of loctite in order and replaced in a different sequence. Viscous fan is Left hand thread. Removing crankshaft bolt can be a pain Recommend 27mm socket and breaker bar from below move it clockwise until its against the chassis .go inside turn the ignition a couple of times the starter should undo it for you. also change o ring and oil seal. A drill bit of appropriate size will do for locking Diesel pump.8.5 or9.5mm cant remember witch . When rebuilding be sure to torque everything. Hope this helps -----BB

Bonnybaggott:That's fantastic mate! I told them at Padocks that I wanted everthing, so I got them to send the oil seal as well but they did'nt mention an o-ring.

When I was doing the belt in my Tdi I asked the main dlr for the O ring and was told they never change them . I didn't as I would have to wait a week for it and 30K mls later everything is fine.
I would also suggest that you change the infamous P gasket (between the water pump housing and the head )while you are doing the water pump as it is a common cause of a leak - and it would look much as you describe down from the back of the pump
The Haynes manual covers the work pretty well - I have the LR manual and while I don't get on here every night ask if there is anything I can look up for you.

Thanks Dooroy:Will this p gasket come with the waterpump or is it one that I will have to get separetly from a dealer?
 
There are two a fibre one and an embossed steel one . use both and seal with gasket compound. Clean threads of locktite before you torque nuts and bolts Otherwise you can get incorrect readings. If you do have to get them get a thermostat and change it too. Had one close up near Dijon in July> wrecked engine in a 1998 Disco.

You go to so much trouble trying not to get ripped off when buying a new motor and end up getting stung for your workshop Manuel (suppose in comparison it's better,but still).Ordered a Haynes for the Discovery last Saturday off their web-site for £18.99 + £5.50 postage,Ordered all my cam belt bit's & pieces Tuesday+ £5 postage (they also sell Haynes manuals for £12).Bits got here yesterday in a gut big box:) ,still no sign of the Manuel!!!!!!!!!:confused:

Who's a Sucker then!:eek:
 
I e-mailed them to say that I was not Happy!!:mad:
Just replied that it was in the post-Got it a few days ago!!

Going to change cam belt,thermostat,p gasket,flush system etc.....this Wednesday-So I will keep you posted!
 
Jason, is it true your giving free Hols to anyone who can fix your Landy??? :rolleyes: And is it true that with all the probs you've raised on this forum, it could take a month or two??? ;) Why don't you swap my landy with your Gite:D :D and have a Hol yourself:) :) :)

Cheers mate!:p Your too kind!:rolleyes: Actually already having a great Holiday from my last Audi & the Landy's running just fine with no complaints what so ever:D :D :D .As for the cam belt,thermostat etc that's just "prevention better than cure" and after trawling the net on the subject for a couple of months conclude that if more people kept up servicing and basic maintenance there would be a lot more healthier Landys out there!!But then that might be a bad thing as we would'nt need great forums like this one any more:eek:
 
Sorted new cam belt today & bits "Jobs a Good un"!:) :) :)

The hardest part is getting the kin viscous fan off:mad: , you need a very thin 32 mm spanner or you have to take 2 of the 10mm (head) pulley bolts out for access, that round off when you try and undo them,so you have to tw*t them round with a cold chisel/screw driver which you have to replace afterwards!

The "P gasket" was well fooked,and the 3 main bolts to get to it well rusty (1 had to be changed),water pump didn't need changing but did any way as I had it,auxiliary belt tensioner a little bit noisy,changed thermostat.

Needed a hand to undo crank shaft pulley bolt (sombod underneath with a screw driver into fly wheel through bell housing) to lock it whilst you undo.Put all the bolts from the cam-belt cover into a sheet of cardboard as I was taking them off to keep the order with them all being different lengths and that,changed the crank seal in cam-cover which didn't really need it,cam-belt tensioner changed just as well cos it was well noisy,viscous fan bearing noisy:( but I didn't have one,Dam I will have to watch that!! put it all back together-job done!

Conclusion:Be prepared to battle with viscous fan and you might have a few bolts to change,change the viscous fan bearings if it's a second belt change (120k) like I didn't!!But will!
