I've always bought dayco belts and they've always squeeled quite bad, especially on full lock and they seem to fit quite loose.

Tried a gates belt today, completly different material and went on really tight, no belt squeel and the full lock noise has gone.

With the tensioner pulled back, you really need to pull the belt to get it to fit.
Should it be that tight? I don't want the thing snapping :)

Early 300tdi's had a 61mm alt pulley which took the ERR3287 = 1595mm belt which can also be used on the later 49mm pulley (the tensioner will pull it to the same tension) although it uses the ERR5911 = 1580mm, (using a 1575 will be also be fine, 5mm, the tensioner can take it, not like your are putting the 1575 onto the 61mm pulley however, the smaller belt on the bigger pulley is not a good plan as the tensioner will be be almost at full stroke the full time and has no place to move when the engine slows quickly so can knock it up against it end stops.

Also, how long a bar were you using on the tensioner. Using a shorter bar gives the impression the tensioner is as far as it will go..

The outer diameter of the pulley Inc the lip is 52mm, so presumably the 49mm pulley not the earlier 61mm,
I have a 1580 belt on so it's correct?

Just pulled the tensioner back, there is a lot more slack in the belt then there first was but still no noise :D

I think they measure the belts on the contact surface diameter so with the lip 52mm would be the 49mm yeah (which is good as your alt will spin faster at idle).

Yes. Might just be the way Gates make the belts - I have been in their factory watching them being made and tested!

Do you have a Gates part number?

This is the one
