Hi all, does anyone know if you can buy or make the foam insert attached to the rubber acoustic cover that sits over the rocker cover and manifold.

Mine is soaked in oil and falling to bits the rubber part is fine thou.

You can buy the whole thing on eBay but cost a fortune.

Thanks

Just throw the friggin thing away!

Problem is sound is a funny old thing, and does not work as he thinks it does.
For example he is in an enclosed buidling, he cant keep the meter still for two seconds or even at the same distance test to test.

They make a big difference and work well.
Without the cover there is a very harsh diesel noise in the cab, cover on, it takes the high end diesel noise and basically muffles it.
Guessing that is is the reason LR put it there in the first place.

Thanks all, some good points to consider.

I suppose the point in the video is that it makes very little difference. Regardless of the test location, the test was performed in the same environment with the cover on and off and the distance inaccuracy to the engine would only be minimal.

So is there anyway of refurbishing them as I am not going to spend the small fortune needed to buy one on eBay for what seems like small difference.

I am not entirely sure that just because Land Rover put it there it’s needed the EGR is good proof of that.

I must say the cover is getting closer to the bin at this point.

Cheers.

I do think he should have carried out the test from inside the cab.

I have a s2 with a 200tdi, and once got the decibel meter out, holy shti batman the noise was incredible, I would like to blame the engine, but the whole car is a tin box so the noise cannot excape, opening the windows actually made it quieter!

My TD5 90 XS is a lot quieter than any other Defenders I have been in (quieter not quiet) it has a full engine cover and carpeting and rubber mats (I know CARPET in a defender) the one and only time I opened the front vents on a hot day, I could not believe how noisy it was with them open, so as I say they have never been opened since. When I first bought my landy the aircon needed re-gassing (I know aircon in a defender) thats why I use the vent flaps, It spurred me on to get it re-gassed pretty sharpish. Ahh Luxury.

Remove the cover, drive for a day.
Fit the cover, drive for a day.
Come back and tell us your findings.
Your ears are the best test equipment.
