What do you think the problem is most likely to be?

Well I've ordered a new (Delphi) lift pump. Hopefully this will resolve the problem. Until then I will borrowing a BMW 325, so no off roading but at least I won't need to allow myself quite so much time in the mornings to get to work. :p

Just thought of something, my 300 tdi has been rather difficult to start since using SVO, even with a 20% mix with diesel. Could this be caused by a tired lift pump? (glow plugs had been changed)

could well be part of it, my experience is viscosity can cause problems on my xud powered slooooooow cruiser, filters can need doing more often too as crap comes out tank

Yeah, it's got a long way to suck fuel on discos, thick fuel (oil) will bollox it up quicker. A preheater is a good idea if you plan on using svo in future.

I got my fuel lift pump but when I went to have another lookie I noticed that the fuel injector pipes are in the way! After googling around at 300 tdi pics, I can see they're not normally in the way. Guess I will have to leave it till Saturday.

Sounds to me like its drawing in air somewhere.

My 300tdi was doing exactly the same and also sometimes cutting out but would eventually restart.

I ran a pipe from a can of derv in the passenger footwell straight to the lift pump and drove about for a few miles. Instantly it drove better and had no issues at all. So I went home, dropped the tank out, flushed it out incase there was any **** in it, refitted it and just ran a new fuel feed line from the tank direct to the lift pump. The old girl has never missed a beat since and has been a great truck.

The worrying thing is I bought it off a mechanic who apparently had the problem for months and couldnt fix it.

Turned out to be the lift pump.

Hopefully she will now start better on the SVO when the engine is cold.
