30 year landrover in a field

Hi all, just joined, so please bear with me, i have just been given a Landrover that is in a field where i am working. it has been used to drag gang mowers around to cut grass for years, it is a long wheelbase "convertable" sand coloured on a T plate (78), it looks like it has just come from the army, it is in quite good condition suprisingly, although hot wired and not run for a year. A few questions for you guys, firstly where is the VIN plate, can`t find it anywhere!, what model is it - it has a split windscreen if thats any help and overdrive. And i suppose to be realistic - am i mad taking on a project like this, should i just walk away. Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you all :)
 
Sounds like a 109 series 3 ragtop. Vin Plate! is in the cab near the gear levers. if yu don't know what ya doing I'd stay well away, But if yu wanna make a bit of cash I'll give yu £50 for it :D
 
if you've got alot of cash, more time than you think, patience of a wife, no family to distract you, and a garage, it could be 1 of the most rewarding things you'll ever do.

if even 1 of the above is missing you'll last 3 months before your ready to give and either leave it to rot or sell it as another 'half completed project, most bits to finish' on fleabay.

EVERY job on an old vehicle takes 3 times as long as you plan. most parts are getting harder and harder to track down. if you dont know much about car maintenance you'll get frustrated VERY quickly with an old car as logic hadnt been invented when these cars were put together.

if i was given an old vehicle for free i wouldnt hesitate to restore it, but it would have to be a nut and bolt restoration as anythin else is pointless. the rewards when its finished FAR outweigh the problems along the way, long as you keep that in mind it'll make a great project:D
 
Thanks Mark for the reply, See your point i will probably take the project on, no great rush to finish it, i have storage, and patience, but also have a family, i will give it a go (watch this space for an uncompleted project in a years time!). Anyhow any ideas of a good site for guidance, spares etc. Does anybody know what these are like to drive? (when restored) i have driven a few old Landys in the past and there a bit of a challenge, i have a disco now and even thats not that modern!
 
pics pics !! yeah , i would do it , well worth it . if you have the time and money, i spent £8k on a series 2 finishing it , now im doing it all again, full strip down , its the only way, if yer want to see whats involved have a quick read thru my nightmare rebuild fred , me new series 2a, can see this being pricy, but well worth it as ther not many about now

Unless you have evidence otherwise, I would say it has never been near the Army, the colour looks like Limestone, a standard Land Rover colour at the time.
I tend to agree with 90, put it in for an MOT and see what happens. Don't wast money on a top first.
Someone's looked after it in the past, it doesn't look bad, but stnading on grass for a long period can play havoc with the chassis.
 
as above looks in bloody good nick especially for free!

from here the bulkhead looks good - no rot by the looks of things though could have been painted over i guess. all looks straight - bloody good show!

You have made the right decision :D :welcome: btw :) from the resident ...... I dunno what..... ask the guys :rolleyes: :)

oh i wouldnt say they are that bad to drive - you get used to it. its primitive, its loud, its not refinement thats for sure. but you dont have a landy for creature comforts! i wouldnt use it as your main car and ditch the disco thats for sure
 
Thanks guys, thats encouraging, although i will take a pic of the engine bay at the weekend and post it up, the engine does not look promising to me!. thanks all for your comments!!

;) yeah , its never seen a gun not to mention the army , pretty good lookin motor , yer got nothing to loose with it fer free mate ! thats been well looked after, looks better than mine did, and that were fully restored by a previous owner :rolleyes: so he said, sold it fer £1900 so thers hope fer that one any day !

what is it , 2.25 diesel ! or the petrol

ther always worth rebuilding , fer less than £200 most of the time
