Freelander 1 3 Door Parcel Shelf

Well I have wanted a parcel shelf for my 3 door but didn't really want to pay the silly prices people have been asking for them so I thought sort my own out, shouldn't be too difficult.

I have gone down the fit a roller cover from a 5 door to it, first thing I found was that the distance between the top of the suspension struts is different between a 3 door and a 5 door. The 5 door is wider, around 160mm wider, so the roller cover won't fit between the strut tops.

So I stripped the shelf down and cut it and then had the fun of rebuilding it so it still pulled in and out, not the easiest of jobs but I sorted that issue, imagine the inside of a tape measure.

To enable the roller blind to fit into the back I have fitted the fixings from the 5 door and cut the rear quarter plastics to fit them in to, so that was the seat end of the puzzle sorted.



The next part of the puzzle was how to fix it when it was pulled shut, I thought nice and easy again use the same idea as a 5 door, these fit to the rear of the trim around the rear glass, so I cut the plastics from a 5 door and no that doesn't fit.

After a fair bit of head scratching and trimming I have managed to fit the locators to either side of the lower quarter trim.



And so there we have its fully working removable roller blind in the back of a 3 door, more than happy with the result, total cost under £20.00.

I wonder if a R40 tourer one would fit into the FL1 ? they just click into place on a plate, some also have the cargo nets incorporated.

@Arctic2 not sure about the Rover 75/ ZT tourer blinds - I did have a pair of these, but let them go when I had to sell our ZTT (diesel-ULEZ incompatibility issue ) so I can't now check...

I expect you could make most fit one way or another, a bit of time and effort.

The easiest way would be to get one that fits without having to cut it down width wise.

I needed to reduce the width of the shelf by around 180mm so I removed one of the end caps, this in tern releases the tension on the roller. I them cut the inner spindle, inner tube and outer casing before putting it all back together again. The hard part is getting the tension back on the roller so it retracts on its own.
