my 3.5 v8 (with carbs) has been back firing alot on start up, and not just little pop's, sometimes it sounds like a shotgun going off.
everytime it does this the performance seems to change too, as in sometimes i cant put my foot down in 3rd and 4th.
any helpful input would be appreciated guys

3.5 v8 timing advance weights seize in lucas distributor and vac units fail on distributor- a good place to start.

fuel filter if it is a 110 under drivers footwell next to out rigger.

dash pot oil on carbs topped up and if you have cd175 carbs check the diaphragms are not split, carb balance etc
The symptoms you describe also can be head gasket failure as the latter RV8 had row of head bolts removed as it took 25 years to decide they tipped heads.

A compression test would be a good idea as the steel gaskets do blow across cylinders and are not generally recommended over composite ones.

Ugh, there's enough threads in the v8 section, just trawl through the pages til you find a good one. I started a thread only a couple pages back when mine was running badly.

Sorry to be boring but I just can't be bothered typing it all again...

start at the begining , plugs , leads , cap and arm . points and condensor if fitted .also check dashpots and diaphrams , do timing and it will be better , may not be spot on but at least you know where you are .:clap2:
