Just had a bad month, head gasket went just I was preparing to set off to get a new carb installed (almost failed last MOT). Engine is now running fine. But....

As i set off home from the mechanic I reallised that the indicators didn't seem to be working. Once home I check the indicator stalk and main lights. I found the following:
  • Dash mounted light knob works the side and tail lights (as with any old ex army landy the dial has no markings anymore) but the headlights fail to come on.
  • Stalk does not make the horn work, or the indicators. The beam indicator on the dash does come on, but since I can't get the lights on anyway it doesn't help me.
  • The hazzard button on the dash does make the indicators flash.
So my question is this: has a single relay (or similar) gone or am I the unlucky winner of a double fault.

Unfortunately we moved recently and I have yet to find the military handbook.

If you can help point me in the direction of the most likely part it would be much appreciated.
 
isnt there a convoy light switch on the mod landys?
maybe the garage has played with your knob?
 
Yea, I would check the wiring, these switches have the tendancy to go down the pan even in normal operation while the MOD have them due to the hefty wiring to disable all the other electrics, I suspect this has been modified to be more "civilian" or its just not working right, so check the wiring at the back, a loose terminal, or bad join and short could be the cause here.

Even if your LWT does not have this switch anymore, chances are it did and the old wiring is causing a problem.
 
When I say there is a knob i do mean the convoy switch (it has positions for various light settings), it works for the other light configs (side, no from lights etc).
But would a problem with this cause the indicator to cease functioning too?
 
Yes - because when you're in "convoy" mode your headlights, sidelights, indicators, brake lights and horn are disabled. The last thing you want to happen when you're hiding from the bad guys is for some numbnut to accidentally lean on the horn :cool:

You do need the rotaty switch to be in the right place for all head, side and tail lights and indicateors to work.

I have had a problem with the indicators not working from time to to time - although not recently. Put it down to sticky relay - my vehicle was laid up for a long time (4 years +) and it took a while to free everything up.

Wiring diagrams are a bit small on the website but if you download and print they are at good resolution.
 
Many thanks Steamcoaster & Discomania, I traced through the wiring and finally found a loose (or should I say broken) earth from one of the relays. So a quick 10p later and a little crimp and all is well with the world again.
The wiring diagrams were usefull as it helped give me a starting point.
Wish I hadn't lost the handbook.
