Right, I've had this 24hrs now and already had the rac out. Starter motor just clicking. I've had the solenoid out and seems like the plunger has collapsed. Hope I've ordered the right one as I couldn't find the sticker with the part number on. Not a good start so far

My alternator gave up on the way home from collecting mine so i feel your pain! They do like a little maintenance.

Pain is the word! The starter seems to have 2 accessible bolts and one that's going to require a contortionist. Anyone done this and got any tips before I turn my forearm into a universal joint?

Hi I also feel your pain had to do mine on my back in the snow not a nice job make sure battery disconnected undo the 2x 13mm bolts on the side and remove the electrical connectors now for the fun part there is a 15mm nut on the top that as to be removed once removed just take it apart but I also cleaned mine with contact cleaner as well I brought a repair kit from e-bay from Repairkitsuk think it was about £15 all in

Hi. Its not that bad when you get the right length extension. Much longer than 19cm and not enough room. Somewhere between 18cm and 19cm seems ideal. You can reach over and feel the nut with your left hand and feen the extension on.

That's the one I've bought I think, hope they are quick on dispatch and send it first class.

I did mine last month, got the kit from x8r on eBay £15, delivered next day.

Fairly easy to do, but the 15mm nut on top is a pig. On reassembly I put a small scrap of cloth over the socket then pushed the nut in to the socket to hold it tight while I manouvered it back in place. A 3/8 socket set makes life easier too.
Good luck.

Couldn't wait for the solenoid out so I've got one from a breakers in Swansea, fitted, and we are going again. Interestingly, they wanted 40 quid for a defender starter and 80 quid for a discovery one. Needless to say I got the defender one and pretty soon I'll have a spare when the kit comes. Thank you all for your advice, invaluable already .
