2011 Defender 90 Slight Oil Leak

Hi guys,

I have a defender 90 year 2011
A few week ago I started with a very very minor oil leak coming from the transfer box, I took the vehicle to the garage and was told it was the gasket so I had that replaced then about a week later it started again so I’ve had the gasket replaced again
(free of charge)

It’s been a couple of days or so and I’ve noticed it’s starting again.

Am I right in saying when putting the gasket in you can either not shove it in far enough or shove it in to far?

there’s no play/movement in the prop shaft either

just wondering if anyone can shed any light on this for me

LR's leak, and they tend to protest if the pour is stemmed.

It depends which gasket. Mine leaks from the g-box to t-box oil seal, it runs down the box and drips off the bottom of the square plate. It’s an annoying drip but every time I check the level it never needs topping up.

At 9 years old you may need to just accept Landrover’s leak, it’s just protecting itself from rust and letting you know it hasn’t ran out yet.

It’s bullsh.it that land rovers leak and you just have to put up with it.

Something is amiss, what ‘gasket’ did you have replaced exactly. You talk about pushing it in to far or not far enough and that sounds like a drive seal to me.

If it was the front or rear output drive seal, if the drive flange is scored or damaged then a new seal will only last a few weeks before starting to leak again. It may be that the seal was replaced but not the drive flange.

Can you identify what exactly was replaced?

The attached photo is of a diff drive flange but it’s the same concept on the transfer box. This photo shows a drive member that’s only good for the bin, because the scoring will rapidly wreck a new seal. In this case a new seal and a new drive member stopped the leak. Anything less than a perfect smooth surface will make the new seal leak in double quick time.
