200Tdi S3 88 - PAS - Long travel suspension - Rebuild

Have been setting up the RTV trial for the ALRC National today. The event is next weekend being held in Stainby just south of Grantham on the A1.

Dont know if any of you guys are ALRC members or not. If you are maybe catch you in the beer tent.

Continuation of my "tidy up" on the 88. Painted the rear bed area, complete with tie down points to secure the spare wheel when going green laning or long distance.





Also replaced the stock axle breathers with some extended ones, that go all the way up to the top of the engine bay.

I love the logic that's gone into your suspension setups....you made me think a lot and changed the ideas that I had for me own project...

I will make a note to never argue with you about suspension ideas in the future....:p:D
 
Time for another update.

So rather than spending time sorting out the air suspension on my P38. I thought I’d use some of the Easter weekend changing roofs on my 88.

As a true barn find, I quite literally walked away with a Safari roof.

It’s not in mint condition, but in-keeping with the rest of my 88. It does bring the addition of alpine windows, double skinned roof, roof mounted air vents and a headlining of sorts.

The swap was quite easy, just grunt work as there are lots of bolts holding the roof on. A couple of extra pairs of hands are also a good idea when lifting off the old one and on with the new one.

Had to drill some extra holes for the sun visors and upper seat belt mounts. Plus my CB mic holder and aerial.

Off with the old and now it’s a convertible :D

So since putting in the Tdi I’ve been disappointed with how loud it is inside compared to a Tdi 90.

I originally used standard Series’s diesel mounts for the gearbox and engine. Both gearbox mounts failed last year and I replaced them with much softer round mounts. That seem to be recommended by a vendor. Not sure if they are 90 ones.

Bit of a faff to fit but certainly helped reduce the noise. Today I set on replacing the engine mounts with the same. These went on a lot easier, but still not a 5 min job.

As you can see, the square Series mount had failed on the engine too. This is the better looking of the two, despite it having completely separated. New mount on the right.

I need to do more miles but first impression is yet another step in the right direction for refinement and less noise. Much more comparable to a Tdi 90 now.
