200Tdi Rebuild

I've 2 questions regarding the camshaft sprocket, I can't seem to find the torque setting for the bolt and when I tighten the nut up finger tight I can spin the sprocket inc the shaft Freely with no resistance but if I tighten it anymore than finger tight it becomes very hard to spin. What am I missing? :)
 
about to rebuild mine now it's stripped and painted, what rtv/hylomar did you use on ladder to block mating surface please?

Have you fitted a new camshaft and / or thrust plate? If you have is it too thick? Have you got the correct bolts holding the thrust plate, not sure if the bolt heads can foul on the pulley if they are they are the wrong size head? I think you should be looking for about 0.1 / 0.2mm of endfloat when the pulley is fitted and tightened

Thanks for the reply bud, it turns out that one of the followers fell down and stuck between 2 of raised bits on the can, so when I tightened it it pressed against the follower. All fixed now :D
 
Got a wee bit more done. Got the injector pump fitted.

Got around to fitting the timing belt today, can I just double check that everything looks ok before I put the front cover on.

Fuel pump pin is snug in its hole.

Camshaft cog is lined up.

I am actually seeking somebody to recon my turbo. I've never seen it running so don't know if there is any problems with it, have you used them yourself? How much did they charge?

turn around was 3 days

Really enjoyed reading this thread! We all love shiny new parts!

I'll be refering back to this when it comes time to overhaul my tired dying discovery 200 tdi engine unless I can find a second engine to strip before it dies.

If you don't mind my asking how much would you say you've spent on parts up to yet?
 
This is ace, a mate and I just rebuilt a 200tdi that now lives in my 90.

It's great putting it all back together. I oiled everything as I put it in and copper greased all the bolts then before I ran it I turned it over a dozen times by hand to circulate oil the. With the solenoid disconnected it turned it over on the key to make sure it was all oily.

Use gasket positioner to stick the gaskets in place as some are fiddly to keep lined up. Only place I used rtv was the ladder frame bit the rest just gaskets fitted dry.

Was a thoroughly enjoyable process and the engine goes like stink!

After getting a Genuine Defender 200Tdi engine for a great price I Started the process of rebuilding it earlier this year, I got it all stripped down but then was too busy at work to start the rebuild.

I've finally got the time So I've made a start on it.

First step was to get the block Re bored due to a scratch down one of the bores and to get the block cleaned.

I'm currently waiting on new Pistons, Rings, Conrod bearings, Main Bearings and Thrust washers coming from Turners.

The head is currently getting skimmed, Pressure tested and Valve's reground, Injectors and Turbo is also away getting tested.

My next step is to get the block painted black, Just waiting on the paint arriving, Should be here tomorrow :)

I also tested the Crank End float which is currently sitting at dead on 0.1mm, Between the 0.05 and 0.15 it should be, Is it worth brining the end float down closer to the 0.05 or is it fine at the 0.1 it is at at the moment.

Going to see The Avengers tomorrow so will be getting some painting done on Either Wednesday or Thursday :)

Looks like a good job you're doing there,I need to do same as my Discovery now at 431000 miles and not great oil pressure ! graham
