200tdi - R380

The R380 box will bolt to the 200tdi, it's a straight swap, the only thing I found different was the 380 clutch pushrod was a bit longer than the lt77.

I simply took the LT77 out then put an R380 in using all the bolts out of the LT, with no probs.

If your using the transfer box from the lt77, I'd replace the transfer gear for the later cross drilled type, chances are the splines will be well worn.

I have jsut picked it up today, a 300tdi disco R380 with a TD5 defender LT230, looks to be in good condition all round from first impressions. Im pleased it will go strait in so i dont have to mess about with the clutch ect. I have about 5 bolts holding my engine - gearbox at the moment so might have to go shopping for some!

Just thought id get back so those considering putting an R380 in there Disco 200 know what there looking at.

So far all has gone well, suspiciously well. All that was needed to to was pull one stud out of the bell housing (which came out with a light tug) and swap the mounts over with the old ones (might not have to do this on a different vehicle). The new transmition bolted to the engine and its on its mounts, it has taken about 4 hours so far with two of us.

I am yet to bolt the props back on and link up all the fidely bits.

One problem I do have, one of the propshaft securing bolts on the rear side of the transfer box has been sheered off on removal. I take it i need to remove the flange to put a new one in? How do I know on re-fitting how tight to re-tighten the flange bolt?

Rich.

I also have a shopping list of things i cant seem to find online. I need new rubber mounts for the gear box, the thread on one of them is ruined. And i need a couple of bell housing-engine bolts, the long ones at the bottom. Anyone know where i might be able to get these from?

britpart will be able to supply the rubber donut mounts and bellhousing bolts.

i bought a gearbox mount for my 200, was excellent and just like original. bout a fiver.

also their stock of bolts and fittings is superb. speak to a britpart stockist.

as for the transfer box flange, i would recommend 'as tight as possible' using a 24" bar, and another flat bar bolted onto the flange to hold it steady against the chassis rail.

when i did mine the transfer box was on the floor, so i bolted my flat bar through and got a mate to stand on it, then tighetened up the nut as best i could using a 24" breaker bar.

seems fine so far...!

cheers.

i'm guessing you work for britpart

no, far from it.

just i've used a lot of britpart bits and bats and found they always have what i need when it comes to simple little bits.

some of the stuff is poor quality tbh, i had a reversing switch that failed in months, etc etc, but i dont think anyone supplies as many different bits for land rovers as britpart.

availability of odd thread nuts and bolts at great prices are what really helped me when rebuilding my disco :)

unless there is no other option i won't touch them, i have had too many parts fail some instantly, i fitted a customer supplied britpart window regulator for a discovery, i fitted it up first use snapped the welds, customer didn't want to replace it so i re-welded it 2 weeks later it folded up around its self..... fitted a genuine one and its still going over 3 years later.......

exactly, some of the bits are just **** and put together on the cheap.

but for stuff like nuts and bolts, seals, gaskets etc i find their large stock very helpful, and ive had good quality stuff off them aswell as the usual turd.

but hey ho, just a suggestion for the OP :)

Thanks, very usefull. The mounts i have and are fitted, the bolts i cant find but have bought some that are too long and i will cut them.

Good to hear i dont need to worry about bearing play on the flange, i was worried it would be like doing a wheel bearing, F.T. it is then!

Cheers, Rich.

I fitted a lockheed slave cylinder which cost £45 and it ****ed fluid into the box from fitting, then i got a £8 one from paddocks and it still workes great. But this is not the britpart argument thread!

Try Bearmach they are wonderful.

Changing the propshaft bolts on the output flange was abit of a fight! And apparently the front and back bolts are different leangths. At least ive still got the old box to scrounge bits off! Also have had to switch over the slave cylinder. Need to bleed the clutch and change the fluids, then i will take it for a spin and see if this gear box has any gears in it!

Is that the only incompatability? My 200tdi gearbox has just given up. Can only creep forward with diff lock on. Grate noises!

This is a 300tdi discovery R380 and a TD5 LT230 transfer box gone in, i dont know about TD5 R380s. Has been virtualy without a hitch so far so would recomend it. Havent test drive it yet, maybe it will go backwards in 1-5 and fowards in reverse!!!
