200tdi Engine Noise

Discovery 200tdi is making what I can only describe as a "tfft tfft" noise.

Sounds a bit like a exhaust gasket blowing. Someone said it could be the lift pump...??

I am only used to 300tdis and have never heard a 200tdi running before.

any ideas from this vague description. I will try and take a video tomorrow

Could be the head gasket has blown through on cylinder no 4 at the rear of the engine, against the bulkhead.

If you can fit your hand in there, you should feel the air blowing through.

I did some more research and found that this is a common problem.

and it appears as though I have this problem. Off with its Head!
