one from bottom, two from top - use 2 extension bars between block and exhaust pipe, so that ratchet is in front of exhaust.

or use a ratchet ring spanner.

leave nut on loose.

Would it help if I took radiotor and intercooler out to see what I'm doing?

Have dismounted them already to remove cowling as don't have the spanner to remove fan.

Haynes says just need to disconnect wires for removing gearbox but I couldn't see wires so thought just remove starter.

Literally can not see them

Will go on YouTube and report back to share what find.

Got everything done ready to drop box and boom failed on starter motor wires like a goon

Comes out the top, tight but doable.
Fit all wiring to starter BEFORE fitting and tightening the mounting bolts especially the trigger wire as its a right sod to get at.

Pretty much impossible to get at lol u less you have 2 extra joints in your fingers!

Bloody hell!, I thought my disco engined starter was a swine to get out!
I know the engines differences but the starter is in the same place isn't it?
I drop down pipe off the turbo and remove it back to the centre box, stand on a stool or something by the front wing, it makes working on the starter bolts less strain, remove bolts from above and the bottom one from underneath. The starter on mine wouldn't quite clear the block and chassis rail (to drop it down) so I removed the engine mount rubber and jacked it up a bit and it fell down and out.
I restored my truck many years ago and used ss fittings throughout which made the job some 8 yrs later, much easier.

Oh dear. Manifolds gona need to come off. Thanks for confirming its tricky. Was very demoralised last night after 11 hours with one fifteen minute break only and only took angle grinder to one bolt on exhaust to be squashed by ****y electrical wires.

James martin once wrote dropping box is easy, that's why I was shocked last night.

Defender is literally in bits lol

it is you dont need to undo all the starter bolts ,hardest parts floor plates and tunnel

all i did to get starter our was drop the downpipe..... once that was done it fitted.

some folk on here swore it would come out with the downpipe on .... but no one dimension of the starter was going to fit through the gap between chassis and downpipe/downpipe and block.

You need to take floor plates out? I just took tunnel where year levers are and floor hatch under middle seat

I'll say this. Respect to the professionals who do this daily. A great deal of skill required compared to a novice.

Did mine a month or two back, was tricky but only removed the exhaust down pipe and out it popped.....after a fair amount of jiggery pokery

Only bit I took of mine was the down pipe heat shield, I changed the starter at least 3 times due to water and mud rendering it useless.
Quickest was 45 minutes as was doing it in works time and was in a rush!
