I've been reading about relatively recent MOT regs regarding catalytic converters, and am wondering whether there is meant to be one on a 1993 200tdi defender engine. I'm potentially buying one which has a straight through exhaust but am concerned it may fail an MOT if it doesn't have a cat if one was originally in when it was stock.

It doesnt need one.. You should be more worried about excessive rust within 30 cm of a mount..
 
Late 94 was the year egr and I think cat was fitted to disco, unsure on defender
