200tdi- bit of advice please?

i have just been to look at a 'H' reg disco. its done 120k and is in pretty good condition. A few cosmetic niggles to sort but looks ok apart from that. A little bit of corrosion around the back door, and i think the boot floor might need doing in the near future. All tyres and wheels are good. As is body work. Electrics all working etc...
A couple of things i'd like a little advice on however:
1) Transfer box, it goes into high/low/neutral fairly easily, but i couldn't seem to get it into difflock. Is this just through lack of use? or wasn't i trying hard enough? (didn't want to break it!)
2) There is a clonk in the transmission when the clutch is let out sharply but no problems if it is let out smoothly. Is there anything to worry about?
3) The clutch seems to bite quite close to the floor, but doesn't slip at all, so is this ok?
what sort of price would you say is reasonable for this?

1)probably lack of use, try a bit harder
2)layshaft is worn, they all do it just be gentle on the clutch and it will be ok
3)might just need bleeding, might need a new clutch

as for price it depends on what you want to pay. mine is a h reg but its immaculate underneath so i would want nearer to 2 grand for it. you can pick up an average h reg for about 12-1500 quid

If the seller doesnt seem to know muh, play on the cluth, the clunk and the transfer box "problems" to haggle the price down.

I would say around the £1000 mark really. I paid £1200 for an L reg afterall

Next time you have a look at it, push the floor just inside the back door, if it's crunchy, you might need to get it sorted sooner than you think! You might be able to haggle the price down on that too. If the seller agrees, you could take the 6 screws out of the plastic bit just inside the rear door and see how bad it is underneath - did this to mine the other day ('94L 200Tdi) and got a fright so covered it up again for another weekend.

Thanks for all the advice. I went back tonight to have a second look, and after prodding around under the bonnet found the inner wings to be fu*ked, rotten and falling apart with a tiny amount of pressure. As well as in other places. Anyway... a fool and his money are easily parted... so i guessed it was time to walk away.
One last question for now, is the sort of rot common on all discos of this age?
and will there be less rot on say a disco from the middle of london thats never seen mud in its life than on one like this, in the country getting caked in wet mud everyday?

if this thred is about rusty 200tdi's


my G reg 3door disco... the inner wings arnt too bad!, but the inner and outer sills are compleatly gone, the boot floor, and all the body have gone so it sits low and crooked!, otherwise its fine and would be cool for a landranger kit or something like that as the chassee and engin etc is good!

so i purchased a 300tdi, and am having fun sorting all the niggles with that

When I was looking around for a 200/300 I worked on the idea of walk away from ones with sunroofs.

Now I am not saying that all of them are bad (before the rest of forum goes mad!!) but I found that most of them leaked and that started the floors off. Whilst the ones without definately were sounder.

I know that dont apply to inner wings/back doors and missuse (it's a 4x4, its suposed to get muddy!!) but it helped me. I nded up buying a x school run one with no sunroofs and payed a little more, I only had to replace the nearside rear mudflap bracket (£25 ish pus some paint)
