can anyone help I have a defender with a disco 200tdi conversion in not happy with the air filter set up can anyone give me some ideas of a good setup as mine seems to be restricting air flow?

thanks

Its always a compromise with the disco 200 conversions, none of them ever look really right filter wise, even the 200 def set up aint perfect.

What do you currently have fitted , I have discovery 1 on mine with a cone prefilter but currently running as DI ie no turbo fitted.

Using my original 2.5 na air box but I'm having to run a 2 metre hose from the top of it down under the intercooler pipe under the alternator to the turbo I'm thinking this needs to be shorter surely this would restrict air flow? Obviously got the wing intake going into it as well looks factory but I'm a bit concerned on how long the box to turbo pipe is?

My short term solution:)

Had already ducted heater with new pipe to front so as not to have to have blower on all the time

My Pre filter took 1 or 2 db of the noise of air intake .
Had the oil bath on mine originally but found it too noisy.

Cant hear mine at all, but Im getting old and probably deaf!
Have you fitted the genuine defender TDI engine mount rubbers? they make quite a bit of difference noise wise, utter arse to fit them mind.

Mine has the old fashioned tin can filter with mesh and oil, presumably thats an oil-bath ? Ive never had one before. How much oil should be in it ? Does it matter what sort ? Is any maintenence ever required ?
I told you I'd be asking very basic questions.

Oil level is uaually marked in lower can section should be at a level that the mesh part of upper is emmersed. oil collects the dirt and needs renewing occasionally dependant on the number of miles and amount of dust.
Re defender engine mounts yes I have these fitted to my 200DI.

Well worth googling how an oil air cleaner works very clever, air shoots down the middle towards the oil, then does a 180 deg turn back up through the mesh and dirt is dropped into the oil with centrifugal force, I don't think mesh is actually in the oil.
Any old dirt cheap engine will do.
Worth changing the oil once a year and giving it a good scrub out, mine has been on for roughly 4 years and theres not a drop of oil mist inside the intake pipework, I would have to guess that a tdi flows at least twice as much air as the std diesel engine, which shows you just how good it is.
