Hi,

I'm looking for advice on which LR Defender to buy for use in a tree surgery business. Got about £5000 to spend, but will buy a winch if not fitted to LR bought. I heard that the 200/300TDIs are more often stolen, but are preferred as they are more robust than the TD5. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks
RB

Well for tree surgery I'd buy a Husquvarna or Stihl, not a Landrover ..

But then, I'm not a tree surgeon either ... ;)

200Tdi and 300Tdi are both derivatives of the original landrover engine. Very tough and very durable. The 200Tdi is pretty unrefined but the 300Tdi isn't bad at all, also its got a wider spread of torque than the 200Tdi. Either engine is very simple to fix if it breaks, and all parts can be reconditioned. The Tdi engines are a bit more economical than the Td5.

Td5 was a completely new engine, bristling with technology (such as electronic unit injectors), and ECU control. As such its far more refined than the Tdi engines, and has an even better torque spread. The downside is there's more to go wrong, also you can do very little in the way of reconditioning, eg crank can't be reground, oversize pistons not available etc. So a sick one could cost you dearly, but then when its all working its a nicer piece of kit.

So, you pays yer money and takes yer choice. For my money the 300Tdi is the best compromise between refinement, durability and ease of repair.

Hi, Richb1967, I would agree with Landyman. 300tdi maybe the way to go, spares reasonably priced and readily available. With a little know how and studying, fairly easy to work on but as they say if it ain't busted don't mess with it .Good luck with search an keep them saws sharp!!!.:D.
