Saying that thought the one in Essex may consider PX for it, might be one way to go.
Other thing I suppose I should consider is she's 22 years old, what repairs and how much is it going to cost later on, compared to a newer 300tdi even if the outset is slightly more expensive.

apart from the obvious body changes, whats the main difference in the engine?

Well it's got 1h30 left on the bidding, not going to buy anything without looking first. just hope they come back to me to let me know if I can have a looksie later on.

300 a little more refined and quieter , a few more horses - 200 a bit more agricultural but many reckon it the stronger engine . But there are more refinements than just the engine on the later "300" version of the vehicle . The early car was put together using a lot of stuff from the Rover groups parts bin , sherpa and maestro vans etc and so was a little stark and basic but not without its own charm and character . Later on the part sharing in many cases came from rovers cars so better ergonomics on switch and control placement . But you know all this bit . Engine wise its horses for courses ...me , I would ideally have a 200 engine for rough and work use and a 300 for road driving .

i think youll struggle to find a good un for 500, most on fleabay in this area go up towards 1k unless you want a rust bucket or a gas guzzler.

my h reg has ba proper cubby box not a silly handbag.

300 has more plastic and foam .... guess its supposed to be soundproofing.

300tdi has the water pump mounted higher on the engine so a low water level results in overheating and head gasket more often

theres a general trend to more plushness and leccy gimmicks to go wrong as you get newer

300 has a stupid rubber bit instead of a proper uj on the rear propshaft

I used to love the sound of my 300, the sound of convidence. main thing is I want another disco(well tbh I would love a twin cab defender 110-not going to happen!!) got to take me to work and back approx 13 miles each way. don't care if it's noiser than the 300(you haven't heard my kids!!!!:lalala: omg.
Yes defo a bonus, no ecu/maf/abs/xyz/abc/def/ghi etc etc to go wrong. all you need is a spanner, screwdriver and a bloody big hammer!! job done.

Even though the 200 is older(if looked after) would they tend to outrun a 300 then?

Purely on an engine basis ? If well cared for , very probably . But then , if a 300 is WELL cared for ....sod it ! Ask someone with more sense than me ! Wheres JM when you needs him , eh ? Tell me that !

just looked at the listing.....

sounds pretty average.... its had/got some rust..... youve either got to accept it will probably need welding for next mot... you either pays the garage or buy a mig.

its had a head job.... itll either go on for years or headgasket will go again depending on how good a job was done..... but if they hadnt said it had been done you wouldnt have known.....
bottom line is you will probably be looking at the cost of some welding , couple of hundred maybe for next mot ... but theres little electronic gimmickry to annoy you and run up massive bills.
if my h reg had died its the sort of thing id be looking at....assuming the rust is not terminal 750 id be happy.... 1000 walk away 500 well chuffed

200tdi left the stable with 121bhp where as the 300tdi left with only 111bhp. i've a 300tdi and friend has a 200tdi. his feels like it has more pull then mine, well did until i fitted a straight through centre section exhaust. I prefer my 300 as its more comfy and a better place to be inside. The 200 however is alot stronger, has more guts. And doesn't seem to have to many problems other than tin worm, and leaks

What I meant was that I wasnt sure about the figures ! Either way , the difference is marginal . But real world , people do say that the 200 has better low end torque .

Part of the reason why the TDi 200 feels more torquey is that the final drive ratio is lower than the TDi 300 setup.

Consequently TDi 200 at 2000rpm equates to approx 50mph, whereas TDi 300 at 2000rpm equates to approx 60mph.

So, from the viewpoint of any 'lugging work' such as towing and off-road, the ratio with a TDi 200 has definite advantage.

Plus the TDi 200 delivers approx 15% better mpg. We got 36mpg daily with ours, on a run 42 and a best ever of 47mpg!!!!!
