Reg, and poss a receipt from seller.

Or a validating letter/invoice from a selling/fitting garage etc etc.

Think they're just trying to reduce the problem of defenders etc being nicked for engine conversions.

Attraction for TDI for me is that it can run on Veg oil/filtered waste oil or biodiesel without significant modification.

Therefore even if I only get 25 mpg, the real mpg for me (on biodiesel) is around 250mpg, as my bio is made from free waste oil. I only pay for chemicals/electric to convert it.

hey mark, i am from wakefield and would be interested more in this biodiesel, waste oil type thing, i have a series 3 petrol engine, i know i would need to change to diesel (aparantly not too much stress on swapping over) but what other things would i need do to make it a 250mpg beast ......

If you want to use proper biodiesel, then you just need a normal diesel engine conversion(200 ro 300TDI best, but 2 1/4 or 2.5D's would run too, albeit with some risk to elderly Lucas pump seals).

If you want to use veg oil (either new or well filtered/dewatered waste) you will need to do a twin tank conversion too. One (can be small) tank will be your startup diesel (or biodiesel) the other your main veg oil tank. Then a bundle of valves/switches etc to change fuel routing (search on web for dieselveg to get an idea).

Making either biodiesel or filtering waste veg will require you to set up "processing" equipment at home. This can be simple or complex, and vary from cheap to "silly" money, depending on how handy you are with plumbing.

End results are still the same.

Got 2 non turbo 200's....one in a series 3 88'' and the other in a 2a 109''.....lovely motors....yes 30-35mpg. Of course its poss to fit with the turbo and dont know anyone who has had gearbox problems but your halfshafts wont like 112bhp if you boot it.

To me the 80ish bhp of a 200di feels about right on a series without starting to worry about uprating shafts, brakes etc. Its a nice torquey lump that is great for towing and even my 109 is happy at 65-70mph on the motorway with overdrive.

Biggest drawback is its much noisier without the turbo.

So far as I can make out PAS is a lot of faffing about and most folks either remove the pump and move the alternator pulley to bring it into line or, as I've done, rip the internals out and fit a breather and fill with oil.

Its also true that with the turbo the motor is more efficient but only in theory because if you have the power your gonna use it.....thats my thoughts for what its worth anyway

300TDI exhaust manifolds fit a 200 nicely and allow use of a straight downpipe, instead of the convoluted route needed to get off a 200 manifold.

Can anyone confirm this?, Sounds like a good option [is this with/out turbo]

What is the PAS [power assisted steering?].

I've just bought a Series 3 and I am looking to put the 200 engine into it and as such I am also looking at 'bio-diesel'.

When you say "filtered waste oil", are you talking about cooking oil or engine oil?

If the latter, how much of a mission is it to do? Please feel free to PM me if it's easier.

Filtered waste cooking oil use is legal upto 2500 litres/year, and won't do a TDI any shortterm harm.

Using engine oil is really bad news both legally, environmentally, and in terms of damaging your engine.

Lots of stuff on the vegetable oil and biodiesel forum.
