2006 td4 shudder, anything other than driveshafts?

Hi

May I ask people's advice please.

I am abroad and about to buy 2 drive shafts and will arrange for a local mechanic to fit them but before I do I wanted to make sure I have identified the correct issue. Not easy here as I don't speak the local language.

So a shudder through the steering wheel from 50mph and worse when faster. Much worse turning right and noise is more of a clonk. Tyres and wheels all fine. Driven off road daily. When pulling at the drive shafts they do knock internally and louder on the drivers side where the main issue seems to be.

There doesn't appear to be any new noise or vibration etc through the gear stick and there is no shudder at all unless accelerating.

Am I missing another possible conclusion or safe to replace the drive shafts with new ones?

Are all the tyres the same make and model as well as size? Plus pumped to same pressures with those with the most wear on the front?

Have you tested the VCU recently? Using the 1 wheel up test...

Might we worth removing the prop shafts and VCU, then driving it to see if the vibrations/clonking goes away. If they don't then it is presumably the drive shafts. Bad drive shafts can damage the support bearing in the IRD which can destroy the IRD - so be careful.

Yes tyres all good and problem only started in the last week and nothing changed in the car. Will do the VCU check thank you.

I got a bad tyre when I got mine changed and the shudder was terrible. The tyre company changed it right away. It's a quick, easy and cheap check before you go changing parts.

Are all the tyres identical, I.E. the same make and type with least worn on the rear? If not then it's likely that the IRD has been damaged, and is the cause of the vibration.

An update and the car is fixed.

Took it to a local garage in Spain and he replaced the inner part in the drive shaft only and it worked a treat. No shudder now and it cost me €90. Booked it in at 5pm for 10am the next morning and it took 20 minutes. Very happy.
