Hello all

I would appreciate your ideas since I don’t have a monopoly on clever thinking… or money :(

My TD4 has 230,000 miles, I am getting 45mpg REGULARLY. This last year I had to replace all the prop shaft bearings and joints. This last week full new LUK DM clutch and hydraulics (I have driven 150miles and checked all joints and fasteners for tightness). Today 4 new tyres, the old tyres had worn evenly across their profile and front to rear, there being slightly more tread left on rears. I had the wheel alignment checked and there was a need for a very minor adjustment consistent with normal wear and tear.

VCU seems good with OUWT (do these things start to vibrate as they age, can’t see how, but?)

BUT, I have the type of rumble described in: -

https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/freelander-1-td4-rumble-from.387428/

and I also read: -

So do you think the following approach is sensible or do you feel there is a better plan to consider? : -
  1. Perform an IRD oil change using its colour as a diagnostic, proceed thereafter with IRD change update if needed (maybe I should source a good one?)
  2. Change the lower engine tie bar bush (it must be tired).
  3. Change front wheel bearings as a precautionary measure, they must be tired too.
I am planning being in UK with the car in the next few weeks too, so if there are sensible ideas for sourcing parts items directly or getting wheel bearings changed by reliable types, I would certainly appreciate suggestions.

Thanks in advance.
