Picked up a Freelander for my daughter 2004 TD2 . Anyway all good for 6 momths or so but after first service it started to miss and surge on the highway and stall when it got warm after a 30 min run ( temp gauge read half) we tried injector cleaner cleaned the fuel filters front and rear, came good a little but still missed when it got warm no problems when it was cold. Even cleaned out the EGR valve Now it is loosing power and blowing heaps of black smoke on excelleration. Turned out to be split Air intake hose. Fingers crossed it is all good now and thanks to the info on the forum pages I was able to assist the local mechanic to address my issues as they were scratching their heads a bit.

Intercooler hose split or even a tiny hole will give you the black smoke, also when I was first reading your thread I first thought could be intermittent break down of the crank sensor or it's wiring, nice to hear you got it sorted.
