Yeah, hopefully they will sort something out, I picked them to buy from as they had Bentley's, Ferari's, Aston Martins etc, but that probably dont mean **** now days

You must have paid top wack then - doubt if you will have any trouble with them - my tactic was to fax the top man with all the details and your rights and then when he replied saying something like they will fix the car I faxed back within a few minutes still asking for money back - the main thing is keep it on the boil and always reply quickly - and be firm but not nasty - and eventually if they are ok you will wear him down and they will give in. My returns were both brand new - a 2000 discovery td5 with gear changing problems and a 08 plate defender tdci with diff problems.

I payed £11,500 for it with 109,000 on the clock. Engine sounds lovely. Was looking at a few within 30 mile radius and they where all around that price for full service history ones from traders. Only got it from a trader incase of such problems, I only hope that they sort it all out, even if they replaced the box for me I would probably be ok with that but we shall see

Spoke to dealer today, they said if it is the torque converter that can be changed on its own. I always thought if you had the box out you just replaced the whole gearbox unit as well as it isnt worth putting it back only for something else to go wrong and have to take it out again?

I would return the car as of un merchantable quality and get my cash back.

Going to take it to my local Land Rover specialist and see if they recommend a complete recon box, if so I would be happy to keep it knowing i shouldnt get any more box issues and get dealer to pay, if not its money back route.

If the torque convertor is on the way out, odds on the gearbox will not be far behind. Debris from the torque convertor gets into the valve block etc.

Sounds to me like you may have already fallen in love with the car. Considering the dealer's initial stance of "it wasn't like that when we sold it", I would still suggest you get your money back if you can. I'm pretty sure you can find another one out there that works just fine.... All the best mate.

Yeah, I see what your saying, but now i've had time to calm down and think about it, on my budget I would be getting another high milage one and could be ok to start and develop problems 1, 2 years later. Everything else seems ok. Least this way I will hopefuly have a recon box and not have any gearbox related issues in the future. And to be fair the guy who said "it wasnt like that" was more he "never noticed it when he drove it". They seem willing to sort out so fingers crossed. Better the devil you know and all that. And no, I dont have Stockholm syndrome... :D

Left it at dealers over weekend, they started it yesterday morning and said it was fine. Everyday my wife or I start it there is a problem so I said keep the car till you find one do they said call them Thursday as they will leave it sitting for 2 days and see what happens. If they still say there isn't a problem I will take to my local land rover dealership. I spoke to them yesterday and explained what happens in the mornings which they replied was obviously something wrong. They are local to me so gonna see if one of the mechanics can pop round my house to start it in the morning with me and see what they think...

Right, dealer had for 2 x weeks and took to gearbox specialist who said there is nothing wrong with the gearbox. All the people at dealership who have drove it say there is nothing wrong including the owner. He says that you need to wait 30 secs after starting the car as it is a 2003 first model and is very under powered, this allows the gearbox to build pressure. Tried yesterday, started it and waited about 5 seconds, put into drive and it would not move. I was able to rev it up and let it fall for about 25 secs then rev'd to 2500 and it started to crawl, albeit very slowly.
This morning I started it up and waited the 30 seconds as the dealer advised and when I put into gear it immediately started to crawl, again albeit very slowly and as I drove off felt underpowered, but assuming because it was cold.
Am I worrying over nothing, is this normal behaviour of the car, does anyone elses behave like this. I just assumed all autos would crawl as soon as drive is selected, even from a cold start within seconds of starting? Any advice appreciated...
