Hi guys

Really hoping someone can help, I’m at my wits end! So I’ve just been told that my rear lights are not working (normal lights for night).
Reverse lights work, indicators work, fog lights work and brake lights work (top light and bottom lights - I’ve been told the main cluster doesn’t include a break light - please correct me if this is wrong!)
I’m honestly stumped - any suggestions? Ps fuses checked and bulbs checked - please excuse the crappy diagram!

The red lights that you've marked with red crosses are the fog lights. They remain off unless the rear fogs are on.

Hi! Thanks for your reply. Which lights should come on for normal night driving with the headlamps? My headlamps work but nothing illuminates in the rear.
Thanks again!

The bumper red lights (inboard of the indicators) should come on dim for tail lights, and get brighter when the brakes are pressed, the high level light above the spare wheel will also come on with the brakes.

Wow so just the bumper lights as tail lights? That seems so strange to me but thank you for clearing that up! They work when the brakes are applied but I get nothing for the tail lights. I will do some more digging now I know where to look! Thanks :)

The tail lights are a bit pathetic, so some people have actually modified the wiring and bulb holders for the fog lights, so those work as tail and brake instead, using the bumper lights as the fog lights. ;)

The reason LR made the bumper lights the tail lights, was so they were still visible with the tail door open. The spare wheel would obstruct the higher lights when the tail door was open, making the vehicle look like a motorcycle at night when parked on a hard shoulder, when changing a tyre for instance. ;)

Thank you so much! Honestly have been pulling my hair out! I would never have even questioned it myself without someone mentioning my lights were out - then doubting myself! :)

If the bumper tail lights are out, only coming on with the brakes are pressed, then it's most likely to be the bulbs. They use duel filament bulbs called 380 under the Lucas numbering system.

Sounds like they need replacing to me.

Are led's legal?
i think some are .. some aren't

usually states in description
' for offroad use only '
if not legal for road use

i've had led sidelights / parking lights on mine for ages
i think they're the 'offroad only' type
have had no issues at mot time ..
[ nor any other complaints :-]

On SWMBO's Freelander I wired the top set as tail/stop, and the bottom set as tail/fog.
I got over the spare wheel covering the O/s light cluster by fitting a row of LED's wired up to the interior light, so they come on when ever she opens the back door.

That's a neat solution, and really deserves its own thread. ;)

I wired the top set as tail/stop, and the bottom set as tail/fog.

I did my TD4 the same, also put the indicators up top and reverse lights in the bumper. The white lens of the 2002 on makes this simple.

With 4 tail lights the door being open is not a problem for visibility of the lamp but I like the Led offering!!
