Hi all,
Quite disappointed with no replies from my previous Thread so I"m trying again.
Bell Engineering have advised me to have the Automatic gearbox on my 2003 Freelander Serengeti 5 door Automatc Flushed out and Refilled. Has anyone had this done because my local Landrover Specialist has told me it needs a special bit of kit to do it. Any ideas anyone?????
I did contact the garage that usually does all my servicing and he told me they would need it for 2 days but that would simply be draining it. What do you think would this be Ok?????
Please any help or advice really appreciated.

I'm not expert on this, and never changed fluid in an auto box.

From threads on here though it appears you never swap all the fluid - I don't know how much actually gets changed in a "change" - maybe 75%?

People talk about doing multiple fluid changes to get the fluid as fresh as possible.

I think that's right, I might be talking out of my posterior.

Hi when I changed mine I did it three times used under 10lts I believe its not a good idea to flush all the old fluid out auto box don't like it
Good luck

We just did drain & refill about two months apart on my son's TD4 Auto, although the second time was after removing the box to sort the reverse band failure, so the TC was mostly empty as well before we re-filled it.

Another worry is you cannot change the filter without removing the box.

I would be concerned if the flushing displaced dirt & crud from the filter back into the rest of the gearbox. Plenty of US websites with Pros & Cons, especially on older gearbox.

That's quite correct. It's not a good idea to flush an old gearbox. The reason being is the dirty fluid is full of abrasive clutch particles. In an old transmission these abrasive particles actually help prevent the clutch packs from slipping.
Doing a full flush removes most of the abrasive particles, which can then cause clutch pack slippage and burning, which is completely counter productive.
This is on top of the possible issues shown above.

If the transmission is giving issues, its best to address the issues, or have a reconditioned transmission fitted.

Hi all. thanks for the replies.
My local 4x4 Specialists in Land Rover contacted me and gave me a price of £150.00 +VAT to FLUSH GEAR BOX AND REFILL and it will take them a couple of hours. So what the hell do I do. Yes Nodge68 if I thought the car was worth it I would have a recon TRANSMISSION FITTED but she"s a 2003 TD4 with over 149k on the clock and being a pensioner maybe the cost would be prohibitive for me especially with the Cost of living going up and up.

Hi Nodge,
The answer is I haven"t got a clue. I"ve owned the car for the past 6 years and when I bought it I got my local garage to do a top up but I had doubts as to whether it was done properly, but just doubts.
Anyway I will get a partial change done but at my age and the fact that I would have to do it outside I"ll have to pay someone to do it.
cheers
