My steering column motor works just fine. I have up and down and in and out. However, recently, it has started to forget it's memory position. More recently it occasionally doesn't move into its "rest" position when I take the key out of the ignition. Upon further investigation it appears that this linked to the precise micro position of the key. I'm thinking it could be dirty contacts in the ignition switch????

Does anyone have experience of this and what is involved in pulling the ignition switch apart and cleaning it up?

If it is the same as the TD6 the ignition switch is a simple thing, there is a barrel that accepts the key it has an actuator to operate the shift lock, the thing that stops you taking the key out when in drive. This is screwed onto a separate contactor block that has three positions, which are ignition. Position 1, position 2 and then start. If it was the contactor block I would expect other things not to work when you turn the key as nothing is specific to the steering column position.

Getting to is it relatively straight forwards but you do need to remove some screws in the centre console to gain access. If you do go for a new contactor block, you don't need the barrel, the ones for BMW are cheaper than LR, if the same as 2005 TD6 which is 36545.

Just my two pence worth I am sure an adult will be a long shortly to set me right.

Thank you. The contact block is definitely cheep enough to be worth a try. I had a fiddle yesterday and whether or not the steering column does what it should do appears related to what I do with the key.
