Freelander 1 2002 (pre face lift) TD4 Problems and a strange fuel filter query

Hi All,

Sooo the freelander died on me the other day resulting in a tow home. It's done 139K but was running fine up till then, bit of a splutter then died. Couldn't bump start it. It did start for a few seconds after about 5 minutes then died again and nothing. No fault codes according to the RAC man. It doesn't appear to be getting any fuel. The pump under the bonnet whirrs with the ignition on but doesn't go off.

On my car the fuel pump is in the tank. I removed the very useful access panel under the rear seat and disconnected the pipes. There doesn't seem to be any fuel in them. No fuel was pumped out when I put the ignition back on. So I am presuming that this pump/sender unit is knackered. It's been running fine till now so I'm hoping that there are no problems with the injectors. I've ordered a replacement. Opinions???

Right next thing which seems a bit weird to me is that I was looking to order a replacement fuel filter while I'm at it. There are two different types listed.

Now it states that the longer thinner one is for TD4 Engines From VIN Number 2A209831 onwards. With the stubbier ones being for lower VIN numbers. My VIN number is2A399*** which suggests I need the thin inline filter.

However am I right in saying that the thinner one is for those Freelanders that have the fuel pump under the rear wheel arch. Like I said mine is in the fuel tank. There appear to be two cylinders under the fuse box in the engine bay. The larger one I'm guessing is the fuel filter, and would it be the stubbier filter that fits it????

Here is a picture of what is under the fuse box. It just seems that my VIN number doesn't match the part I need??????

I have found some confusion with this whole VIN number up to and after thing for my model (2001 td4).

Anyway, yours is the same as mine, you need the thicker filter which is a screw-on style that goes on that thing in the engine bay.
You have an in-tank pump and a second pump next to the fuel filter. Both need to be working. Normally you can hear the one in the engine bay when the ignition is on and the in-tank one is harder to hear unless you are on the ground under it.

Thanks very much, I thought that was the case, and that is the confirmation I was after. They seem to have made some changes to various bits and pieces around my model year which always makes getting the right part a bit tricky. The one in the fuel tank is making a bit of noise, but like I said doesn't seem to be working (apparently they tend to go after 100k?!?) so hopefully the new one will remedy the problem.

have a look in the engine bay first to see if the low pressure pump is there with the filter it will be on the right hand side if it is not there then it is under the wheel arch right hand side of car and it will be the thin one.

Except he clearly said he has the filter and pump in the engine bay.
