2001 P38 2.5 diesel water pump best brand?

Hi humanity,

In the process of replacing fanbelt & removing the high pressure fuel pump so thought I'd order a water pump too while the belt & fan Cowell is off.

Which brand of water pump for the p38 2.5 BMW diesel is best/quality. I'm looking at a Bearmach part but then read someone highly recommended Airtex?

Obviously it's a bit of a faff job so I need a reliable part.

I also read that the plastic pumps can splinter. Is this true and has it happened to anyone?

Plastic ones can break yes. When I first got my 38 I removed the pump which had a plastic impeller to fit one with a steel impeller. The plastic one was fine but when I removed it there was bits of plastic impeller inside the recess from a previous breakage that they hadn't cleared out.
Can't remember the make of the steel impeller one though.

+1 on metal impeller.

Last one I bought online had a picture of a metal impeller and when it arrived I sent it back and left my old one on. My metal one has been on there 12 years or so with no issues. Damned if I can remember the brand though.

The plastic BMW pump disintegrated and it was a real bugger to get all the bits out. The metal one has been in there for 5 years or more I think. Not sure where it came from now though.

We had fitted a Qh to a clients car with a metal impeller but the bearing failed after 2yr.. I got for mine a Errr jeez can't remember... It was a plastic impeller either way.

No I do remember, it was a short while ago after swimming

along with everything else that had a bearing in it attached to the front of the engine
