used to be a common mod on fords, in my yoof, to pack out the spring with a couple of washers or spacer to pre compress the spring.

You naughty person ;) - not that I have ever done such a thing  - but there's a perkins A4-212 that I, er, didn't do that too after the spring broke and the thing was needed "yesterday" for first cut, honest guvnor :D

( still going too :) )

No bother :) , but as as others have said ( above ) ... IF it has been stood for a while, it's entirely possible that the drilling the spring sits in is full of cr@p , or as also mentioned above corrosion ! ( whatever next - land rovers which corrode:eek: - say it ain't so :D ) - and just needs a clean ..... ( as you said - it'll be a dirty job ! )

Worth measuring the length of the spring and comparing it to the spec - any shorter and it needs to go in the bin !

Doubt a new spring is daft money in any event...:)
Found a spring on line with a measurement but better I think to get a new one if I just change the spring.
