750 for a garage isn't bad, especially when Steve Parker charges 300 just for the exhaust adaptor to fit the 200tdi from a disco, is the garage aware of that???
the exhaust adaptor was about £120

I can see the point that you are trying to make - but .........
You might have (incorrectly) assumed that i had gone to a main dealer - far from it - i'm usinga one man company (and 2 apprenticies) he's got a tiny little workshop, 20 years of experience and enough work to take him up to xmas and i am positive i will get a far better job done by him than a main dealer.
My "two men in a shed" comment was aimed at those who have read a few haynes manuals, seen a few images of engine swops and think they can do a better job (all within 2 days)
So you had your conversion done by 3 men in a shed then. do you take it to the garage to change a wheel? cos you dont trust "amatuer spanners". a poorly fitted wheel will make you crash! a poorly fitted engine can not fall out! I am 32 and i have over 20 years mechanical experience too and have done this conversion with help from my dad and its probably to a higher standard than a garage would have done! a garage will not fix any other potential future probs they come across..all they will do is stick an engine in!!! IF anyone is considering doing an engine conversion dont be put off by someone who has a Very small toolbox!
PS my engine swop took a day... old NA out, TDI out of the donor, in wired running and tested ... bloody hard work though and days of fiddling to get it spot on plus the donor was a 90 so a little easier..
Your rash comment "a garage will not fix any other potential future probs they come across" is just nonsense unless you know how every garage in the country operates.
Hey, if you know of a garage that does extra stuff without being asked and doesn't try to charge you for the extra work they've done FFS put their name and number up in here!
Speaking from personal experience of a few garages, none of them do extra work for free unless it's already part of the job they're being paid to do (not reusing rusty bolts etc, and even then expect to pay for the new bolt they use). Some, but far and a very long way from most, will tell you it needs doing and offer to do the work, most just do what they've been asked/told to do and take yer cash as quick as they can.
Cheers,

You appear to think that i have a limited toolbox - yet another rash comment that can safety be ignored methinks.
