Hi all, quick question

My 110 was fitted with a 200 Tdi and LT77 box, which I've now removed, and I'm (hopefully) going to be fitting a 300 Tdi + R380 box.

I've sourced the engine and box (both originally from a Defender).

Will the Defender R380 gearbox fit the mounts for the LT77? And where abouts will the engine sit with the box fitted in the original place?

r380 is better on its crossmember mount but earlier will fit , ive allways fitted transmission/engine as lr did and moved transmission forward meaning changing tunnel ,floor plates ,props etc

Hi, cheers for the reply.

So if fitted using the original mounts, will the sticks come up in the right place, assuming I change for an R380 tunnel?

And if fitted in this position, the size of the box is the same so the props will go straight back on, right?

And lastly, where roughly will this place the 300 Tdi? I'm guessing somewhere slightly forward of the original position of the 200, due to the slightly longer R380 bellhousing?

if it's a defender box yes. locate engine on existing rear mounts and loosely bolt up front mount.
lower front of ewngine into position and mark chassis remove engine and weld new mount at previously marked position.
 
I have a 300tdi seat box, tunnel and floors which a customers wants me to sell(Im making him a new centre tunnel for cooling pipes etc)
 
you wouldnt need an r380 tunnel unless you fit box as lr did it has wider part near hand brake to allow for t/box ,so youd use lt77 tunnel if fitting as lt77 position ,but then exhaust ,coolant pipes etc need modding engine would sit forward of 200 but further back than std 300 ,props would fit as now

Jolly good that's what I was hoping for... pipework is all easy, and I'm planning on building a custom exhaust (incorporating one, possibly two stacks).

Going to collect the 64,000 mile engine and box on Wednesday, Yippee... :D
 
I've always found that if you can lay the two engine and box combos side by side you can get a good idea of what will line up and what wont.

Not always possible but its worked for me in the past.

Yeah, ill get a chance to do this on Wednesday when I drag the 200 & Lt77 out of the workshop and drag the 300 & R380 in. Will take pictures and make note of the differences and post them here for future reference. ;)
 
Just a quick thought, seeing as the new engine is a 1997 model from a manual Defender, will it have the electronic EDC stuff on it? If so, what are the implications of fitting it to an older vehicle?

you will be alright edc was only fitted to auto ,so at most egr which you can blank and leave on
 
Collected the engine and gearbox yesterday, and all looks well (especially gearbox, looks and feels like new!), but there is something about the engine that is worrying me...

The engine code (on the side of the block) is 23L, which means it is a Defender unit. However, the injection pump seems to have a 3-pin connector and wire coming from the top of it... is this the dreaded EDC? :eek:
 
if wire is connected to throttle pot ,its for egr ,just leave as is ,if a black box covering solenoid ,just breal it off to uncover solenoid and connect with one ignition live to solenoid

Yeah just worked this one out by asking my mate who has a 300 manual Disco :D

i thought a 23l engine was a disco unit with 122 bhp ??

As far as I know these are the codes for 300s;

Serial code prefix:
16L (non EGR), 23L (EGR), 24L (EGR Auto) Defender
17L/18L (EDC Manual), 19L/20L (EDC Auto), 21L (EGR Manual), 22L (EGR Auto) Discovery/Range Rover Classic
 
When fitted to vehicles with an automatic transmission, power was increased to 122 horsepower to make up for the power losses in the transmission. These engines (designated 23L) had Bosch Electronic Diesel Control systems, where the mechanical injector system was controlled by a fly-by-wire electronic throttle to reduce emissions.[71]
