2 Stroke in Diesel

Hello everybody

I've read a few times here about 2 stroke being put into Diesel engines and for a while I did it myself, however this weekend myself and Turboman decided that my tank could be contaminated due to a fatty substance in the fuel filter. We drained fuel cleaned tank etc and I now run standard diesel with some fuel additive. This is all normal and most of you are wondering where I am going with this.

The old diesel out of the tank was put into a clean jerry can to dispose of at my local garage diesel workshop heater, today I took it down there and as they were pouring the diesel it ran nice and clean and I wondered why I was wasting it.... Until it reached the last of the jerry can and it came out like red syrup the 2 stroke doesn't actually mix with the diesel very well instead as it is heavier than diesel it sits at the bottom of the tank doing not alot.

Since cleaning the tank and filter my smoke on startup has decreased by about 50% it's not half as bad as it used to be.
I also spoke to the local diesel specialist and he reckons it's really not good news 2 stroke oil is a lot heavier than diesel and he has replaced several pumps on older vehicles where people run Veg oil 2stroke oil


I would not recommend to anyone who is thinking its a good idea to mix the oil not to.

hmm, i`m wondering if you put part or fully synthetic 2T oil in as a mix.

the way I`m thinking is, diesel will mix with petrol,
petrol will mix with all types of 2T, part/fully synthetics or just mineral based "cheap" 2T.
but does veggie mix with fully/part synthetics, and/or does it mix better/ not so good with base mineral 2T (2 sTroke) oils..
more thinking then, would cheap base 2T mixed with a small amount of straight petrol mix with a diesel/ veggie mixture...
I`m no expert, just an old disco owner, but my old disco will burn almost anything thats mixed in the tank..

an old friend of ours unknowingly put about a gallon of diesel in his pristine vespa 2T scooter, it started with the mix already in his carb and fuel line but only got a short distance up the road and it began to smoke excesively until it spluttered to a stop, never to start again, till we drained the vespas tank and carb and refilled with fresh unleaded.
his engine was a modern type of 2T with direct oil injection into the inlet manifold,
but residual diesel still in the tank made it smoke for a while......
he was not a happy man bless him....
sadly neither the man is no longer with us, after being attacked with the big C,
and his pride and joy was given to his son, of which we never saw again either,
but the look on jimmy`s face of realising his derv top up remains with us...bless you jim wherever you now are..

I'd also say its not had mineral 2SO oil in it. Synthetic doesnt mix well in diesel.

It's was definatly mineral oil and low ash I have a bottle of it here I agree the engine will run on nearly anything but it will not do your injection pump much good or your injectors and it's doesn't run as nice in the cold.

Whats the supposed benefits of running two stroke in your diesel?

it replaces the sulphur in the diesel as a lubricant, also quietens down the engine a bit.

Hmmm, not sure I will be putting two stroke in my TD5, on the word of "some people" I did chuck in some diesel injector cleaner a while ago, notice no difference so I guess its running ok anyway. Thanks for the explanation though.

Makes my TD5 run quieter and has reduced exhaust smoke.
A full tank, ( 80 lt ), on a D2 only needs 450ml put in.
I put some 2SO in diesel on the bench and it mixed fine.

out of interest can you leave it on the bench for a week to see if it stays mixed

interesting i run a nissan terrano i know i know but it runs on svo with 5% petrol a dash of 2so and runs perfectly been doing it for 4 years on the look out for a rr p38 dhse same pump n injectors

MIneral 2-stroke is perfectly dissolved by diesel and it doesn't separate on standing. The only problem I can think of, is if you add the 2-stroke after you fill up it may sit on the bottom of the tank for a while till it dissolves completely. Solution - add before you fill up.

IMO the real problem is with adding SVO to diesel as it gums up everything.

I was a dubious person on the 2 stroke thing until I tried it. I put in approx 100ml to a full tank but this is only on older diesels. I dont do it on anything common rail.

Runs notably smoother. I only use the cheapest 2 stroke I can find though, no fully synthetic stuff.

If you vehicle is running smoother after cleaning out the tank and replacing the filter then that would be the reason!

The filter I just replaced had only been on for about 3 months so I can confirm it was not because the fuel filter was dirty or blocked

On my 2006 Disco 3, running 2T can 2-3 mpg difference and is somewhat smoother too.

Cheap ASDA red stuff (JASO FB) @£5/l works fine.

Just started doing it in mine, will see how it goes and let you know
