Hello new member here I really could some help. I’m swapping an injection pump on a 1986 2.5na 110. I purchased a used pump and the special locking tool so I don’t have to do the timing. What’s the procedure Just swap the pumps and I’ll be good? I’m doing this in my driveway with little experience. Any help would be appreciated.

I’ve only done it at the same time as replacing the timing belt. In theory yes swap the pumps and it should be fine, but then you can fine-tune the pump timing either using its timing pin on the side or just by trial and error. The pump body can be rotated on the timing case to give this fine adjustment.

Do I have to lock up the new pump with the pin before I install it?

Yes. Lock old pump, fit the removal tool then remove pump. Lock new pump and fit, remove removal tool.
I assume the removal tool is the one that holds the pumps gear in place so the pump can be removed without stripping out the timing belt cover and what not?

So I lock the old pump through the bolt in the side correct? Same as the new pump once I fit new pump take pin out of side of pump and put bolt back?

It's been around 16 yrs since I had to lock and remove a 2.5nad pump and I only did it once then, I cannot remember how it was done- sorry.
200tdi I have done a few times though.

pump shaft has a key way so you dont have to lock the pump, you undo the nut secure the pump pulley then fit the holding tool and then undo pump nuts, pipes etc then wind pump from pulley

Do I have to lock the new pump before installing it? Also do I have to pin my flywheel first?
pump shaft has a key so just line the key up,you dont need to pin the flywheel timing will stay as is as long as pump pulley is secured properly, but its good practice to set as you would if doing a cam belt change as once pump is fitted it will worth checking pump timing is sopt on using the pump timing tool through the side of pump and n=moving pump on its slots if needed

So I’m going to attempt his in my driveway I have the lock up tool. I set the pulpy lock tool first then remove the old pump without pining it. Put the new pump in without pinning that also torq new pump remove the locking tool put not back on the end of pulley to pump and done?

you wont be able to remove the pump pulley nut or refit it with holding tool in place, which tool have you got for holding the pump pulley

So there is no way I can try and cut the hole in the locking tool bigger to be able to take the pump nut off? I’m in the USA and there is nobody that knows about these to help me or that I can pay to do it. I didn’t want to take the front off and mess with the belt or timing in my driveway lol. This hasn’t ran for 3 weeks I special ordered that tool and picked up a used pump online

its not the nut that has to be removed first in any case, the tool is too large to fit in 2.5 na circular inspection hole
try it on yours as your kit is like another i have and the holding tool is too big as its for the tdis
