2.5 n/a feul pump timing

help. have been trying to fine tune the n/a lump and can get it to run ok when warm ,but the main problem is starting when cold it lumpy as anything and throwing out white and black smoke . have advanced the pump but it sounds terrible and but starts fine cold,also kicks out black smoke as you drive along,so retarded then advanced slightly again no black soke atall when driving jist this cold starting problem . do I just keep moving the pump or am I missing something. cheers

The 2.5 N/A engine is generally a bit rumbly from a cold start even with the timing spot on and you will see white smoke, but it will start to smoothen out after twenty seconds of cranking or on revving up. If you marked the injection pump casing and the engine block it joins to so that you know where it was originally, just make the tiniest of adjustments to advance the timing until it starts to black smoke. Once you have got it to black smoke, adjust it backwards ever so slightly to rid the smoke and you should be pretty much bang on. There's nothing else involved besides adjusting the injection pump as you have been doing.

Do you give her a bit of gas from a cold start to get her started up quicker?

cheers pos thought I,d got it a wee bit wrong. don,t usually give it a bit throttle to start cause it was ok,but will jist try a bit more adjustment

Alright, well good luck! You can get the perfect balance but it might only take the slightest of adjustments, an adjustment that you can barely see in fact, so keep that in mind. If all does go wrong just set it back as it was! You can't really loose

i use guess work to set mine and pos is right you dont need to move it far. cold start probs might be caused by something else.

it just initial start up that it smokes and clears with in seconds. will just keep adjusting, thought I may have an injector problem but seem s ok once it warms up abit. its just a bit lummpy at tick over when cold but this disappears when warm to.

DO NOT give it throttle to start it, as soon as you hit the throttle on this pump you will knock out the excess fuel function on the pump and make it hard to start. This engine MUST be started with NO throttle. This function can also be knocked out if you adjust the idle speed on the throttle rather than the idle speed goverener which lies against the incoming fuel pipe.

As soon as it starts, give it a little throttle till it warms up a bit, then it will run a treat, you could also raise your idle speed slightly if its lowe, then when it starts its going a little quicker and will overcome the lumpyness.
