Gidday,
i have been having a few overheat issues with the old girl and have decided to replace the viscous fan coupling. The availability of non genuine parts for anything other than a jappa in NZ is **** poor to say the least and i don,t want to fork out 2 weeks wages for the genuine item.

Does anybody have a part number and brand name for a non genuine item that i could use as a starting point at our local repco or bnt? ie a quinton hazell number or sometrhing? Alternatively, where could i buy the part from in the UK and have it shipped over here?

Just had a quick scout around on the net over here and it wasn't good news. There are plenty of viscous units available without blades but they all seem to be for other L.R. engines. The only offerings here seem to be completye fan assemblies which means big, heavy, expensive shipping.

Have you tried going the BMW route? After all it's a Beamer engine. Yeah I know they're not known for cheap parts either but they are known for being written off by crap drivers.

As far as i know BMW NZ didn't bring in any beamers with that particular motor. I spoke to the local bm dealer and they said that they would need a part number to price up the part. If the same coupling is used on other BMW engines then i could maybe source one from a wrecker, but i need to know what engine to source on from.

Cheers

Had to replace mine on DSE couple of weeks ago, also tried the BMW idea same result as you, Beema breakers in Hamilton know of only 2 ever imported into NZ. Finally managed to pick up a new one from Canterbury Land Rover for $350, might be worth trying Southern 4WD as well (both in ChCh). Quotes from UK were between 160 - 190 GBP inc delv.

Be wary of some non gen replacements , I bought one in UK , it lasted about a week and then destroyed the shroud. I got my money back but had to get a new shroud , got the coupling from the same guy, it had just had a new gen item fitted when it got hit in the rear .

If your car has aircon, fit a thermostat to bring on the aircon fans, I can send you a drawing if you PM me with an email address. In Europe the viscous fan can be dispensed with, bit hotter in NZ but the electrics will still probably do the job. Stat and a mounting box less than £20:D

spot on guys thats all good info, the stat and aircon fans sounds like the way to go,as its not that much warmer in nz although we do have some big hills. I will pm datatek for the info and give it a go, but if i stilll have overheat when towing,or over the rimutakas (local hills) then i will chase up canterbury land rover for a new part.

Cheers

Further to my last post might be worth contacting these people see if they have agent in Aus/NZ eg Coventrys Repco etc . They make for LR in Turkey OT-SA Otomotiv San. Tic. Ltd. Sti.
