I have a defender 90 with a 2.25 petrol in it at the moment.I want to change the engine to give me a bit more power and better mpg (currently 14mpg).What petrol engine could i put in to utilize the existing gearbox (i think a LT77 ).cheers !!!!!!!!!!!!!

2.25 petrol in a defender with an LT77? that's a very strange combination.
early defenders had a 2.5 petrol option.

i'd recommend fitting a 200TDi - if you search, there's a thread on here somewhere with a link to detailed instructions how to do it.

Early Defenders (using the term for all coilers) had the 2.25 petrol (they called it 2.3).
The only obvious petrol option is a 2.5, but diesels were always far more popular, so one won't be easy to find.

Perhaps it hasn't been made clear enough to the project hopeful that the problem isn't so much what 4x4 system he uses at the gearbox/transfer box, but more a matter of what UJs are fitted in the outer ends of the front axles.

Permanent 4x4 Landy axles use Rzeppa constant velocity UJs in the swivel hubs. These are designed for full time drive conditions. Contant velocity joints transmit smooth wave-free drive .....

Part time 4x4 Landy axles use ordinary + UJs (commonly referered to a Hardy-Spicers) that are not really suitable for full time drive conditions, and will fail in short order BECAUSE they do not drive smoothly at any time, expecially when turning. These are NOT "constant velocity" joints, and the transmit 'fast-slow-fast-slow' drive speeds every rotation of the half-shafts.

They make a real mess of tyre treads if used long term on tarmac because the 'fast-slow-fast-slow' drive is always exactly on the same rotation angle as the tyre.

Rug man was asking about engines, so why frighten him with irrelevant talk about CV Joints?

Because he was also suggesting an LT77 transmission thus permanent 4WD into a 2WD system designed for only part-time 4WD.

That was all.

Might save the laddie a lot of trouble and expense to know this.

ere Charlesy - since when did a 90 have a 2wd system - I thought they were all permanent 4wd.
Are you also saying that there isnt any sophisticated gadgetry - just different UJ's?

OUCH!!!!!
I saw 2.25 petrol and assumed Series .....
Sorry Guys!
I'll see you all later - off to shoot myself for making such a silly blunder.
