Pretty much sums the job up, I use a dial gauge cos I have two or three of the buggers.
At this stage it is nice to borrow a proper timing tool to reset the timing pointer, this gives a good starting point.
You can then play with the pump timing 1mm at a time to fine tune the running.
I did all that in with a complete rebuild of my engine, reset the injectors to 130/135 bar. Little or no smoke and pulled like a train.
An electric vacuum pump helps with the smoke so that you can ditch the knackered butterfly set up.
