Mine's always given white smoke at start up - especially this time of year. Much less so in Summer.
Although the handbook suggests flooring the throttle whilst cranking the starter, I just hold the throttle probably about a third of the way down and back it off as it catches and revs increase. About 12 seconds of glows and it fires up after no more than 2 seconds of starter turning - could take 4-5 seconds if a heavy frost.
I find mine runs much better with Millers diesel fuel additive - just seems to run smoother and burn cleaner.
