I had some piston's like that [ not in the motor now ] in my farm run around. Cylinder was only lightly scored so was honed and new piston/rings fitted and the head smoothed off with a flap disc.Runs well enough now
Now you're talking my kind of language! The bore doesn't look too bad to be honest. I think it's dropped a valve seat. Maybe I could hone it with a flap disc as well...
Im not convinced that's a valve seat, it doesn't look too bad though.
These guys will have any bits you need, don't buy king or britpart pistons.

Looks valve seat cross section size on the picture. You'll soon know.+1 on Turner Engineering. Great website, good prices and excellent support on the phone. It's usually Freda that answers the phone. She puts orders together and so knows every part and is also very knowledgeable about the engines and faults etc. If she needs help she asks the on site engine builders or puts you on the phone to them. Superb place
I'm not going to be rebuilding this engine. It just doesn't make sense to me. I can pick up a 200tdi engine, gearbox and axles for about £600, which will give me more power and more reliability.
I've already had to drill out the crankshaft on this engine to provide a key for the crank pulley, so I'm going to have to call it quits on this one.
The rolling disco chassis I'm looking at doesn't come with a transfer box. Will I be ok to use my transfer box temporarily? I'd like to upgrade to a disco one for the better gear ratio.

For £600 you could easily buy a 300tdi with a couple of months MOT, drive it home and strip that, then you'd have a transfer box and disk brakes all round. Horses for courses between moving the engine mount for a 300 versus mucking about with the exhaust on a 200

The bits in the top of the piston are remains of a piston ring. You would not be rebuilding your 19j just cleaning up the head,light honing of bore and replacing a piston/rings.All can be done with the block in the vehicle. Just an idea to keep you going until you find a good 200/300.

Hi all good then,put a 200 in mine 9 years ago from a rusted out 90 [it had been putting boats in the sea] and it's so nice to have a motor that starts straight away as well as more go.
Yeah, the new engine looks a lot less oily, I'm looking forward to having a bit more go. Managed to get the engine and gearbox off the disco chassis and get my engine out of the 90. I'll split the 200tdi engine and gearbox tomorrow and get everything cleaned up ready to start building it all up Tuesday. I'll head up to Maidstone and grab the bits I need Tuesday morning. Going to fit a new clutch, new timing gear and head gasket. Might as well sort the bits while it's out the car!
