1994 Defender 200 TDI - Q Plate.

I never had any trouble changing French/German discoverys to UK plates. Turned up with any paperwork,new mot/inspections
They checked the chassis number & uk plate info arrived few days later.

@dieseldog69 did you do anything special for yours to import with paperwork?

No, it was the usual MOT and chassis number check over, send monies and wait for papers to get the plates made up, my hassles came with HMRC and snail mail, them losing papers and then being told to do the waiting game whereby weeks pass by before anyone believes that there is a problem, it was a proper pain in the hole, I miss the good old tax office and the local DVLA offices where they were happy to rubber stamp you and get your problems resolved.

As far as I am aware the only problems ever to arise is if there was no CoC or previous case matriculation data to work from.

Ex-pat here in the village has a uk reg Jap import Mitsubishi crew cab can't get coc here from main dealer and to matriculate it they want 17,000€ vehicle is now on the system here as he applied for reg with an export certificate which dates the vehicle leaving the UK... basicly stuffed now got stopped at airport picking up family recently and was told remove vehicle from Portugal or next time it will be impounded.

Sounds about right, Portugal actually polices it's roads, for as crappy as they are, they do have a nice climate to set up shop and do their random stop check point controls.

CoC not available as it was already a grey import into the UK so does not have an EU affiliated CoC, For sure the government wanted to protect the domestic sales market by making it almost impossible to move cars across land borders easily.

Shame but he might as well sell it back to the UK market and buy something there :oops:

Your right...he .. erm... bought details of another vehicle in the UK changed plates and didn't apply for matriculation...worked so far!!
 
So if there is no record of the motor with dvla bet there's a copy or information with hmrc? Have you any info you could supply them?

Trouble would now be data protection.

I would give up & live with a Q
 
I've contacted HMRC several times with full information about its re-import in 2001 and no matter how I have worded the information to them, they don't seem to be able to understand that I'm look for historic information and not trying to bring in a vehicle 'today'. They also keep sending me emails telling me how to complete the paperwork for current re-imports!

Realistically I doubt they've any information from 18 years ago unless it's on microfilm...

Keeping the Q plates is increasingly likely.

Keeping the Q plates is increasingly likely.

There will be no record of import in 2001 that's why it's got a Q plate might be better looking for export in year of manufactor it will have been issued a certificate showing vin and colour but not a reg number that will then match up to Jersey records for reg..
 
Would that be from JLR or Gaydon?

Not sure but I would think JLR would have to apply for certificate of export to supply to dealer to prevent JLR being charged vat at time it left factory I would think.
Have you tried the Jersey side it will be on their records but not as an export otherwise again it would show up on uk records if presented with certificate,one of the reasons you need the export certificate is to show proof of ownership when re-reg
