Well, After suffering the money pit Discovery 2 for too long now. I have crossed to the dark side.

I found a re-chassid 1993 90 200Tdi. Rebuilt engine, New turbo, Recon axels, New shocks and springs, All poly bushed, Re built Bulkhead, Galvenised chassis. And a decent price. Couldn't pass it up really.

I want to make a few minor upgrades, to make it a little more comfortble and to suppress some of the noise. I know these are basic utility vehicles, but a few creature comforts wouldn't go amiss.

I'm looking for a resonably priced leather steering wheel and was wondering if the discovery one steering wheel will fit?

The seats are still original and need replacing or recovering with new swabs etc. Get rid of the PVC.
There's no roof lining. I guess it was dumped when stripped for the rechassis as the inside of the roof is too clean not to have had one. Can you get linings for the rear that don't have the roof lights?
Carpets to smarten it up and quieten things down a bit.

I don't want to spend stupid money KISS springs to mind. Buying a carpet kit for the rear at £150odd doesn't make sence when it just needs some carpet cut and glued in place. Obviously the front ain't that simple. But you'll get my drift.

I've looked around and realised there are more LD accesories sellers than you can shake a stick at. Who are the better ones?

Suggestions, advice appriciated.

One thing you can cross off your list is carpet, no matter what you do with a defender it Will sooner or later get wet, promote rust and smell. Best fit a sound deadening rubber mat set. Mud UK and Exmoor trim are two well known suppliers.
Probably more west than you:).

Carpets dont make any difference to sound proofing, too thin. Most of the noise you cant do anything about, you can muffle it with closed cell foam and topped with a Wright off road rubber matting system (Drew supplies them to every other company and the Army), put more closed cell foam on the inside of the roof and around the side panels. This will dampen vibrations and slightly muffle other noises. But you will never get it Discovery quiet, or even close. And yes it will leak, no matter what you do, it will, and carpet will rot.

Thanks Guys. Haden't really understood the carpet implications. Re matting, Who is Drew, any contact details?
Definately not expecting it to be close to the Discovery. Just dampen it down a little.

Any ideas on roof lining and seats?

Seats Exmoor trim. Or Ebay. Roof lining, Ebay is a good place to start. Or LaSalle-trim.co.uk.

I found stable matting works well for the floors, looks OK and cheap as chips. Self adhesive foam for the large panels will reduce a lot of the booming and road noise, but you will just have to get used to the mighty roar/rattle of the 200TDi.

Agree with the above, Large slab of stable matting for the rear load area, thick heavy rubber does a good job of sound insulation as well as protection.
For the roof lining just get one with the cutouts for alpine windows and fit it, it doesn't matter if you dont have the windows. The standard utility versions did not come with a full length lining.
Seats, I would just re-trim the standard seats with an exmoor kit, maybe upgrading to fabric rather than vinyl.
I cannot help with the steering wheel, but personally I like the original wheel, the smaller fatter padded modern ones make it more difficult to adopt the typical defender driving position with an elbow out the window.
