First of all, hello to everybody.

I took the plunge yesterday and bought the Range Rover I had been thinking about for ages. After looking at 3 or 4 machines, I discovered a 1988 example with 55,000mls (which appears to be genuine based on the complete lack of rust, and entirely intact original tailgate!) and fell completely in love with her on the test drive.

I feel like I have entered a whole new world, and am amazed how much club support there is, parts, accessories - you name it.

My adventure now begins. She runs beautifully, and on a 50mile run back out of London cruising at 70mpg I averaged about 13mpg. That woke me up.

However! The seller warned me of one problem - she is a dodgy starter.

When I turn the key, sometimes she will turn, reluctantly, then fire up. But when warm, I only get a click and a quiet buzz. Putting her in drive and rocking a few times eventually will get the starter to fire and she starts well.

Before I fill up this new money pit, any hints are welcome. A new battery was the first and easiest, as the one in her was too small. She turns over faster, but 9 times out of 10 I still just get the click and the buzz.

My next step is to fire the starter motor direct with a pair of jump leads to see if it kicks in. If so, I'm onto the ignition barrel. If not, new solenoid or starter.... Cue those replacement parts.

Also, is there anything I should look out for on an '88 model? She's had a new water pump, but everything else looks original!

Thanks for any comments guys!

SOUNDS LIKE STARTER IS PROBABLY U/S, HOWEVER I DONT THINK THERE THAT EXPENSIVE AND ARE EASY ENOUGH TO REPLACE.
As for Mpg. In my old v8 when i bought it i too got around 13 to the gallon.
I flushed the old oil and put in fully synthetic also i added lots of slick 50.
I also replaced the air filter for a K AND N one ( you can get one of there web site).
Eventually i got 17 to the gallon which does not sound great but it is much better that 13.
good luck :)

Thanks matey, I'm wondering if it's worth the bother of removing, cleaning up, testing and refitting, or if I will just bung in a new one for £75. Suspect a replacement is the best - 55,000mls doesn't guarantee a low number of starts!

The connections all look clean as well, so think I'll try and get one tomorrow.

Cheers,
Jock
